Ryan Griffin gets positive reviews in Saints scrimmage

This report actually softens the praise RG earned from the local media covering the Saints. Most observers singled him out over McCown.

The Saints first preseason game is next Friday. Very important couple of weeks for him. As long as he does well I don't care if he wins the backup job or not. If he does well enough to be somebody's backup, that's enough.

More on RG4:

http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/20 ... h_obl.html

Griffin was undeniably comfortable in the pocket, accurate in his throws and sound in his judgement.

He's no longer making rookie mistakes, offensive tackle Zach Strief said, because he's no longer a rookie.

"Quarterbacks have a lot of information to process, and the less you're processing, the more that just comes naturally," Strief said. "You come up and see a defense and you know it; you're not thinking about what it is. The more that they can do, the more comfortable they are, the easier it is for them to make a quick read or quick decision. Obviously at that position in this league, that's the whole deal: How fast can you make the right decision?"

None of the quarterbacks were made available to the media at the Greenbrier resort on Saturday, but teammates said Griffin's growth from last year to now has been noticeable.

"He's playing with a lot of confidence right now, and I think it shows," said receiver Marques Colston. "Being in that quarterback room with two vets like he is, he's definitely learning a lot from those guys and really applying it to the field."

Griffin, a southern California native who was a prolific passer at Tulane, signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent last summer.

"Coming into last year, Ryan was the typical rookie: He kept his mouth shut when he should and he just absorbed. He was a sponge," McCown said. "This year, he has a lot more questions. The great thing is he even has a few answers for himself so he doesn't have to rely on Drew or I for all the answers. That is what a (position meeting) room is supposed to be."

And he looked good against the Rams. Liked the Griffin to Strozier play.

Love seeing a Greenie on the Saints roster. His play was impressive tonight against the Rams.

Barring a collapse in any of the remaining games, he's got the #2. Saints have way too much developing talent at other positions to afford to keep 3 QBs - particularly on defense where Ryan likes to mix it up so much. RG4 winning the #2 spot is huge for him and for the Saints to keep the heir to #9 and not have to tie up an extra roster spot.

RG looked good overall last night, and had great numbers. But he had a couple of bad passes (as in REALLY bad) that just "can't" happen at the NFL level. I think he is going to get #2 as well, but I don't think he has it wrapped up yet.

I fast forwarded through the series in which McCown was QB, so I can't make direct comparison.

Don't fast forward because you missed McCown's interception which was worse than any bad thing RG did. RG did well and McCown lost ground and he has few opportunities to get it back because Brees will need to get some time in the next two games.

RG4 is less expensive than McCown, which will be a consideration next season.

The fact that he is "getting a crash course" in placeholding tells me enough.

And a separate article by Lyons Yellin on WWL.com says McCown has looked less than stellar all camp.

Just zapped through the Saints second game. RG looked good. Really good. And some dropped passes caused his stats to not be even better than they were

God forbid RG4 has to play - Saints fan's biggest fear in one of the most promising seasons ever. But if he does, I feel pretty good that he would put up a Frank Reich/Kirk Cousins type effort. Could he pull a Brady? Tough to do, but for 2-3 games, he could do the job and have the Saints rely more on Ingram/Robinson and the D.

I don't get that same feeling with McCown.

Strozier survived the first round of cuts. He could end up on the PS this season.

Not a good night for Griffin against Indianapolis. He was 8-13 passing but for only 46 yards. He was sacked once, called for intentional grounding, and threw an interception. McCown was first of the bench following Brees and wasn't any better passing, going 3-10 for 45 yards. But, he didn't throw any INT's and had a 28 yard run in going 3 for 34 yards on the ground.

Last night was better for McCown than Griffin but not by much. Griffin has looked much better until now.

I feel the play selection for RG was bad.

During the game last night they said Griffin had the highest QB rating of all NFL QBs through the first two weeks of Pre-season.

Ryan made the 53 man roster, sadly Strozier was cut perhaps he'll land on the Practice Squad

Nothing sad about that, Derrick was never going to make the 53. He hung on and should make a practice squad. Considering he's a tiny defensive guy, that's a triumph.
