Colin Slater
Colin Slater
Working the remote while Thanksgiving leftover grazing, I stumbled across Long Beach State MBB team losing to Wake Forest. One Colin Slater starts at guard for LBS. He looked good against Wake and finished the game with 15 points.
If he had stayed at Tulane, he would be a senior this year and I think he could make Hunter's eight man rotation. All speculation. Nice guy. Best of luck to him out West.
More importantly, his hair is now down to his belt. I suspect he has not cut it since grammar school? The roster lists him at 190 pounds. He is still slender so without exaggeration, his hair must weigh at least 10 pounds and probably more. Interesting method to achieve the strength coach's size goals.

Re: Colin Slater
I always liked Slater and more than anything loved that there were still kids out there who were "Tulane fans since childhood," who grew up, became good, and chose Tulane because it had always been their school even if there were other "better" offers. That's the way that so many other schools get great recruits, but we've been bad so long that it typically doesn't happen for us. I appreciated Slater's loyalty despite our poor record through his childhood. I thought he was a good player at Tulane too, and somewhat given "the shaft" because Dunleavy only seemed to play guys in whom he saw pro potential rather than guys who could be good college players.

Re: Colin Slater
I agree as Slater could have helped us. Best of luck to him.
A magic dwells in each beginning- H.H.
Re: Colin Slater
Well said. As a lifelong Tulane fan, it hurt to read this. Slater has a relatively slight build and is not an elite shooter. As noted, his other strengths could still make him a good college player but they weren't taking him to next level so Dunleavy preferred others. Slater left so he could play college ball somewhere.PeteRasche wrote:I always liked Slater and more than anything loved that there were still kids out there who were "Tulane fans since childhood," who grew up, became good, and chose Tulane because it had always been their school even if there were other "better" offers. However as the cliché says, it could always be worse. Burrow is a life long Nebraska fan with a father and two brothers who played at UN. According to SI, Nebraska rejected him twice with Burrow begging to go there including Frost 18 months ago saying in effect, "He ain't better than what we got." Well he was better than what Coach O "got."
Re: Colin Slater
One additional thought: If Dunleavy had figured out how to retain Slater, he might still be coach today. He bet it all on ROE and no doubt was unlucky about ROE's season long injury. No point guard (even if not an NBA prototype) meant no conference wins and no job.
Re: Colin Slater
Dunleavy believes that not having ROE cost him his job. Whether he was right or not, the irony is he let the one player go on that team (Slater) who bled green his entire life and who could have saved his job for a year .
Separate note: Blake Paul attended the game Sunday. Always good to have alums in the house.

It's much easier to blame an injury than to look inward and admit that you did a bad job.Baywave1 wrote:Dunleavy believes that not having ROE cost him his job. I find it hard to imagine Burrow being anywhere near this good at Nebraska. He'd probably be about what he was last year, which may or may not be any better than what Nebraska has(d).Baywave1 wrote:Well said. As a lifelong Tulane fan, it hurt to read this. when we road tripped to Greenvegas for wave hoops v ECU, my daughter "high fived" the wave coming onto the floor.. Slater's "low five" as they really were for the players, was the most enthusiastic... always admired him for that.. the rest of the guys were just kind of "whatever" as they ran by
YOGWF - of all the Tulane fans in the world, we're the Tulaniest
