Memphis’ Lester Quinones is staying in the draft and will not be returning to school. In a more important announcement, DeAndre Williams withdrew from the NBA draft and will be returning to Memphis next season.

Houston sharpshooter G Marcus Sasser will be announcing his decision later tonight.

Lester Quinones was what, the 7 best player on that Memphis team... he's not getting into any NBA game without a ticket

Didn’t he pretty much beat us single-handedly last year?

To the best of my memory, it was two years ago that he beat us, hitting several 3’s from the corner and playing his “air guitar.” Last season he was one of the few players on Memphis who tried to play team ball.

That’s what I kept picturing, the air guitar.

Although Tulane’s 2022 hoop recruiting appears finished at this point in time, a lot of AAC recruiting continues especially involving the Memphis Tigers. Memphis is trying to reload with transfers this year. AAC POY Kendric Davis left SMU for Memphis. Memphis added a Boise State transfer over the weekend, but still has only 9 scholarship players on the current roster. Last season’s Memphis roster was filled with talented freshmen like Duren, Bates, and Minott. Duren and Minott are heading to the NBA. Bates remains in the portal, uncommitted as of today. Contributors Quinones, Nolley, and Harris are gone. This weekend talented UTEP transfer Keonte Kennedy who had announced his transfer to Vanderbilt, surprisingly reopened his recruitment. The rumor is Memphis is already heavily involved. Vanderbilt HC Jerry Stackhouse cannot be happy.

6-4 SG grad transfer Tykei Greene is leaving Stony Brook where he averaged 14 ppg and 8rbg last season. He also shot 52% from the field and 42.6% from behind the arc. Tulane offered him out of high school, but I doubt there would be any mutual interest right now.

I think Bates played high school ball in Ypsilanti.

He was a major headache for Memphis last year as was his father if I recall. He is likely going for one year and turning pro. Eastern was really bad last year so there isn't much downside for them. For teams that are expected to be good, the potential locker room headache probably makes him not worth it.

Memphis is pushing hard to fill out their 2022-2023 roster. Former University of Florida star SF Keyontae Johnson is in their sights right now. Johnson has not played since December, 2020, when he collapsed on the court and was diagnosed with a heart condition. He had been considered a possible NBA 1st round choice at the time. Nebraska, Kansas State, and Western Kentucky are also involved. He is expected to make his decision in the next week.

More scrambling at Memphis? SMU post transfer Jahmar Young, Jr who committed to Memphis a week ago is now looking elsewhere. At the time Texas Southern was also in his final top two. Although he stated he was rescinding his commitment for personal reasons, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported he had academic issues. I believe Memphis still has 2 open scholarships for 2022-2023. Meanwhile HC Hardaway is making a big push to get a commitment from talented 2023 recruit LeBron “Bronny” James Jr. He plays AAU basketball with one of Penny Hardaway’s sons. Larry Brown recently announced he was returning to the coaching staff at Memphis for another season.

There is no greater testament to how bad Penny Hardaway is as a coach than the fact that they have ALL the connections, ALL the big-name pull, they cheat like crazy and everyone knows it, they have Larry freaking Brown as an assistant (a great coach but also proof of cheating), and they STILL aren't winning big.

Keyontae Johnson reportedly has a 5 million dollar insurance policy that becomes null and void if he plays 10 games.

Houston 6-9 post Kiyron Powell is transferring. He redshirted last season, and played limited minutes in 2020-2021. He had a lot of major interest coming out of high school in Evansville, Indiana.

The roster at Memphis continues to evolve. Emmanuel Akot was a highly recruited 6-8 SG coming out of high school. He signed with Arizona and played two years before transferring to Boise State. He sat out a year then had two productive seasons at Boise State. He then transferred to Memphis for the 2022-2023 season. Today he announced he was leaving Memphis and going to Western Kentucky, having never played a single game at Memphis. The beat goes on…..

Shocking that is takes Memphis time to gel every year. What a mess. How do you install your system or have any level of cohesiveness when you don’t even know who is on your roster towards the end of August?

They go as far as Kendrick Davis can take them on his own. Penny can’t coach and something is going on there. It’s a revolving door.

What system is Penny trying to install? Lol…. Last year Penny had as much talent as anyone in the country. This year there is a lot of talent but, other than Davis or Williams, they can be matched up with. Penny’s son is talented but streaky. We’ll see how the other players “fit in.” Usually under the “Penny System,” you usually need more than one basketball. Maybe this year’s group will be different.
