Should Tulane go after Baker Mayfield?

Unread post by SlamDunk »

Texas Tech denied his appeal to play at OU. He currently needs somewhere to play. (He was a non-scholarship athlete last year, so I think he could transfer in fast.) He would really improve the team.

From an ESPN article of several weeks ago:

"Even though he was a walk-on at Texas Tech, Mayfield is still bound by NCAA transfer rules, and the Red Raiders have not granted him a release to transfer within the conference. Under Big 12 and NCAA rules, if Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma anyway, not only would he have to sit out a year, but he would lose a season of eligibility. "

If he did come to Tulane he would have to sit out a year. I think it may be too late for him to enroll in current semester. Presumably if he came in Summer or Fall, a scholarship would have been loosed up for him. (I can't imagine him walking on and swallowing Tulane tuition.)

BTW, TT not approving his transfer to OU is SOP among virtually all Div 1 schools. You generally provide a release to anywhere except an in-conference fellow school. I don't know if the "graduate exception/5th year rule" requires a release because if so obviously Cherry got one from EC to attend UNCC.

A ridiculous SOP, especially considering he's a walk-on. What does he owe TT, that they can control where he plays next year? Another level of absurdity for the NCAA.

He was basically a volunteer paying his own way to play. I do agree with not letting transfers to same-conference schools.

I understand and agree with the SOP but not for a walk on. That is ridiculous

As for fifth year seniors, they don't need a release unless their current school offers the same graduate program they are leaving for.

If he is going to continue to pay his own way, I think the NCAA policy is unfair. However, if you are going to accept a scholarship at the school you are going to transfer to, I think it's fair to make the transfer sit out.

Why would we have wanted Mayfield? We had future NFL pick Tanner Lee.

Speaking of Tanner Lee. We all know he is now with the Jaguars, but did you know so is Eric Price. https://www.jaguars.com/team/coaches-roster/eric-price

So Eric Price will be looking for a job soon?

He is scripting the first 25 plays, 23 of which are handoffs right in to the teeth of the defense. It will soften the defense up so Lee can overthrow a wide open receiver on a play action pass.
