Tulane baseball commitment JC pitcher

Post by randymc »

Clifton Slagel, a jr. college pitcher, from Heartland Comm. College in Bloomington, Ill., has committed to Tulane. He pitched 43 relief innings as a frosh at the jr. college and had a 4-1 a record with 3 saves, according to his bio. His club finished the year 46-10.

Watched some video on him from high school...I hope he's gotten bigger/stronger and improved his mechanics. In the video, he's throwing 84-88, which is fine, but it's straight as an arrow. He also tips his off-speed pitches (his windup is slower on his curveball and he breaks his hands way earlier on his changeup). These things need to get cleaned up or he won't make it out of fall ball. His change and curve have good action, but out of about 15 curves, he maybe threw 2 strikes. Again, this video is a year old, but he's got a ways to go. He also got roughed up in the Northwoods league this summer. That's a decent league but he got smacked around in his two starts. Looks like a preferred walk-on.
This one belongs to the Wave.

Slagel pitched just two games in Northwoods League. The one linked below where the opposition got to him in the 4th or 5th; and a second game in which he gave up 3 earned runs in 4 plus innings.

A couple of those guys could play for the football team if heights and weights are accurate.

There aren't a lot of 280 pound pitchers out there.

Agreed but 6'7" and 205 is more, shall we say, Randy Johnsonish physique. May he have the same fastball!

Tulane just got a commitment from LHP
Chris Holcombe out of a junior college in Florida
Chris played high school ball in Massachusetts and was highly rated enough to originally sign with Alabama. He was caught up in the Greg Goff over signing situation at Bama and ended up in JC
He committed the last few days to Tulane and Coach Jewett.

They had recruits at the football game, things should be wrapping up soon.

I am so glad my job doesn’t depend on guessing which 16/17/18 year old is going to develop into a baseball/football/basketball player, that can contribute, or dominate (Owings/Aubrey, etc)..

I missed a lot of fall ball, due to other demands of my time. I missed 3 fall ball World Series games for the first time in 4 years.

Tuesday is iffy with the weather, and Thursday is the last game.
