Potential transfer

Former Oklahoma State wide receiver Jalen McCleskey, the son of Tulane secondary coach J.J. McCleskey, took an official visit to Tulane this weekend and was at the game, a source said.

McCleskey (5-foot-10, 170 pounds), who has 167 career catches for 1,865 yards and 17 touchdowns, left Oklahoma State after four games this season, taking advantage of a new NCAA rule that allows players to redshirt if they play fewer than five games. He will be eligible for one season as a graduate transfer.

McCleskey had 73 catches for 812 yards as a sophomore and 50 receptions for 645 yards last season. He was expected to be the Cowboys’ leading target as a senior following the departure of James Washington, who was taken in the second round of the NFL draft by Pittsburgh. Instead, his numbers were down through four games with four catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Tulane already is shy on depth at receiver and will lose Encalade at the end of the year. No other wideout aside Darnell Mooney had more than five catches entering the East Carolina game.

The Wave has commitments from two projected wide receivers — Dante Wright of Navarre High in Florida and Kiland Harrison of St. Joseph Catholic in Madison, Mississippi.

If I were a receiver and watched our game yesterday, I'd be signing immediately. We run a scheme where you get multiple chances to catch a pass in a one on one situation and go a long way, as long as you catch it. Seriously some of our receivers had over 100 yards yesterday and could have had 300.

Can you imagine Mcclesky catching that slant across the middle in man coverage with 4.3 speed. And he won’t drop the ball

Will he graduate this semester? Does it matter with the new four game redshirt rule?

Great news but for all schools this road goes both ways. I think you will see a ton of folks (frosh mainly) transfer for immediate eligibility if he is coming here under the four game red shirt exception and not the grad exception.

Regardless this certainly improved the day's digestion! ROLL WAVE.

This is very good news at a position where we need depth and quality. I hope Jalen has some buddies at Oklahoma State on OFFENSE that want a change of scenery. Please invite them to come and teach us how to score at will. How many years does Jalen have left to play?

Agree it has to be grad exception. Transfers otherwise in general have to sit out a year.

I could see those on a quarter system really gaming these rules. A team could easily have four games before school starts for fall quarter in late September. You then immediately transfer to another quarter school and sit out the remainder of the season making your transfer year your redshirt year.

Brister did a mini version of this under the semester system when he played beginning of season under English and then headed to ULM after the Boss promoted Junior.

The original article posted makes it clear that he is a grad transfer with one year left

Guess his tuition is picked-up by Tulane on a tuition waiver due to his Dad working for the Wave … and not the Athletic Dept.

that would be nice. our D looks like it should be in decent shape the next few years. hopefully, we can get some additional grad transfers on the offensive side of the ball this year

Be good if he graduates this December and can register for the Spring term and be available for spring practice.

interesting point he could be a walkon like riley conroy or a full scholarship guy like scelfo was If the former it would let Fritz bring in another body.

If he's on a non-athletic scholarship (like academic) and plays then he still counts towards the 85 limit. Would think (but don't know for sure) that a tuition waiver would be the same.

Good question. I don't know. Riley did play regularly and (without checking) I'm guessing his father had 13 other folks on basketball scholarship but football has lots of special rules and this wouldn't surprise either.

I'm sure those in the know can provide guidance here. At end of day, we all agree this is a fantastic get for Wave. Meanwhile I watched MU stomp Arkansas and Mr. Scott never saw the field this season. At least McClesky is a proven FBS performer.

At least he'll have a degree from a mediocre run of the mill state school.

His father is a Tulane employee.. he's not on any scholarship. Isn't tuition free for kids of full time employees? Conroy wasn't on scholarship and did not count towards the 13.. even after his father left.

I didn't realize he has 167 career catches and is 6th all-time in Oklahoma State history. Had 29-253 as a freshman, 73-812 as a sophomore, 50-645 as a junior and 15-155 this year before redshirting and transferring. So, 167-1,865 with 17 TD.
