4* Elijah Wood commits to Tulane (MBB)

Post by waverider »

Top-100 junior Elijah Wood tells Stockrisers that he’s committing to Tulane.

“It just felt right,” Wood said.

He held offers from Auburn, Georgia, Seton Hall, Auburn, St. John’s, just to name a few.

I just realize the piece I quoted has Auburn twice. They must really like him

He’s a junior, so it’s a long way til signing day and even longer until he actually plays a college game. Improvements must be made with Tulane basketball long before then.

I have to agree though... does this guy committing basically lock MD in for two more years?

I've posted vaguely before (because I have no actual knowledge of the situation) but I believe there's also a kid out there in high school, I don't know what year, who might be related to one of our coaches and who is higher rated than even this kid. That would be a score.

That said, I love the "no punches pulled" interview where the guy says "you have high major offers, why in the world are you going to Tulane??" You can almost hear the incredulity in his voice.

And as for "would be the highest rated recruit ever", wasn't Honeycutt a 5-star, "top 2 or 3 players in the country" recruit? Or did the star system not exist in the 90s?

According to Bob Gibbons, to the best of my memory, Honeycutt was #7 in the country, Allen #24, Chris Cameron between 35-40, and Cory Childs around #85. Quite a recruiting class by Perry Clark, rated in the top 5 classes in the country. Tim Duncan, Stackhouse, Randy Livingston, Rasheed Wallace, and the othe Ray Allen were also in that class.

Uh, no. There would not have been enough basketballs to go around, as they say. And the coaching and lack of disciplining still would have been the same. Instead we have just been even more underachieving.

Livingston used to hang around the gym with us and play pick up games in the summers. Then he went off to LSU. We thought we had a shot, just like Kerry Kittles and Villanova. You can guess why we didn't.

But back to the point, if Honeycutt was top ten, he was 5-star. This kid is 4-star and top 100, so he can't be our highest rated recruit.

Also, how have we gone this far with no one mentioning that our roster could have Moses Wood and Elijah Wood? Is there a Jesus Wood out there we can recruit too? 8)

(though, to be fair, what are the odds both Moses and Elijah are ever teammates at Tulane?)

you could tell Frazier was a special player the moment you saw him play. A case where the rankings matched the talent.

But you also wonder where he'd be if Conroy had been coach his whole career.

To me this commitment tells me that MD is selling his ability to get players to the pros (plus having a great degree after retirement) and not winning anything while here. No 4- or 5-star player is coming here with the intention of winning the AAC or reaching the Final Four. They can look on the internet at the past 20 years and rule that out. They're coming on the MD promise of a successful career after Tulane.

you're right Pete. Under Conroy Frazier kept doing those things that came easy to him like dunking and playing defense, ignoring the things he needed to work on like his outside shooting and Free Throws. Dunleavy made him a complete ball player and turned him into Second Round Draft pick in the NBA.

Are you’ll ok with bringing in an occasional recruit to prep for the NBA at the expense of possibly winning?

Ideally they'd go hand in hand, but no. But buzz can help too. (Is you'll a new version of y'all/ya'll? )

How do you know Frazier wasn't working on his outside shooting and free throws?
