hoops commit new one out of Gwinnett County, Ga.
Coach Hunter today landed a commit from 6-4 rising senior Sion James, a 3-star all-county performer and honorable mention all-state in Class 6A in Georgia as a junior last season. He plays for Lanier HS. Confirmed by rivals.com recruiting analyst Corey Evans and tweeted by Sion himself. He is a big point guard.

Offers from Ole Miss, Rice, and a bunch of small schools.

great video interview with Sion James; articulate young guy. Sounds like academics plays a big part in his college choice; top schools he speaks of in this piece are Tulane and Yale. He visited Yale earlier in the summer and Tulane this past weekend. He plans to sign in November.

Yale has been a much, much better program than Tulane of late (RPI of 45 and NET of 78 last season) and almost upset LSU in the NCAAs, so I'll count him as a very good addition to the squad.

All State class 6A in GA AS A JUNIOR is nothing to sneeze at.. those are the big schools (enrollment-wise). I think maybe 3 stars are low for a grade for him.

That would have been an impressive interview if it had lasted one minute. But nearly 4 and a half minutes? Very few adults could do as well.. And he's working out hard before that.

randymac indicated he was honorable mention all state... click on the 6A Boys North link, he was "All state" for the north, which includes the Atlanta region which is why it's just as impressive as being 6A for the entire statewavedom wrote:I believe the article said he was All-County.

I will say I didn't realize GA now has a division 7.. which are the REALLY big schools... division 6 are the BIG schools (enrollment)

you weren't wrong, that article only stated all county.. randy didn't provide a link, so I found onewavedom wrote:I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out.
I think we all agree this kids is a great addition!!
One thing I did learn (I've been away from Atlanta for 12 years so things have changed since I was there) that the "North/South" split only further reinforces the strength of Atlanta in regard to the rest of the state in basketball... for the purposes of splitting at least 6 and 7A, south begins in Atlanta with schools south-ish of I-20 in Atlanta showing up as 6 and 7A south... so they apparently had to balance out the state by including metro Atlanta schools in the south region.

I was recruited hard by Yale and considering them until a wise high school teacher of mine said "why would you assume all that debt to go to Yale when you can get a Tulane education for free?"
Smart guy, that teacher.
Welcome, Mr. James. You made a great choice.

Not to mention missing out on 24 pages of Lindsey Scott discussions, debating Frank Pepe’s pizza over Cajun food and some idiot trolling you for not spending enough time in college bars.PeteRasche wrote:I was recruited hard by Yale and considering them until a wise high school teacher of mine said "why would you assume all that debt to go to Yale when you can get a Tulane education for free?"

Hunter is doing an amazing job of getting athletes who don’t appear to be ‘tweeners to play his kind of defense. They also seem to be very bright and therefore more apt to be good team players. I love what he is doing with the mix of transfers and young guys. The four star recruits will come when we start winning. For now, his approach is terrific.

I missed the Yale offer. They are a very solid program
