Most guys playing 3rd base in college played SS in high school.
Hasn't Tulane signed around 5+ SS's the last couple of years? ...or was that Pierce?

Well, part of that is because the SS is generally your best fielder and a lot of times best arm.

Wasn't Haskin a SS and now he's playing OF?

Paul Mineiri recruits a lot of SS. Last year at one time lsu had 7 former SS on the field at the same time. Everyone except the pitcher and catcher were HS SS and the reason being that there are usually the most athletic player on the team.

Right, I think I said about the same thing above. Catcher being the only more "difficult" position, but I don't think you see much overlap in the guys playing both C and SS.

Very impressive offer for a free agent. Too bad the Wave couldn’t hold on to him.

That’s just one of those shrug your shoulder moments. According to the article, the Phillies ended up with international money available, via trade, and that’s how they could spend $800k+ for the Aussie. Any other scenario, and he shows up in the fall.

As for 3rd base, I’m assuming (as others are), that Bedgood is primary 3rd base at the beginning of fall ball. With all of the SS on the roster, maybe one of those guys end up at 3rd. Plenty of middle infielders, so corners will be the interesting battles in the fall. Should be good at catcher, and outfield, so that leaves pitching.. Not going there.

Dave, the one thing that stands out to me is Jewett is recruiting at a higher level. Two incoming pitchers have already signed, and we have another one or two kids yet to decide.

It may have been reported already, but Jensen signed with the twinkies.

We're not set at catcher. Niemann can hit but his defense leaves a lot to be desired. We need to get much better there.
Here we come!

Thanks randy. :-D

I guess in a way we should get use to that, ie losing good recruits.

If we want TU to recruit good players, we have to realize that we may lose some to the MLB draft.

(What's Google?)

that's a joke! :-D

As an Aussie, he wasn't subject to the draft or draft money restrictions. Only international signing money pool, which the Phillies just traded for more of.

Havent seen it mentioned. Roper and Solesky have both signed and been assigned to the Great Falls Voyagers in the Pioneer League, which is rookie ball.

so that means recruit Justin Campbell of Simi Valley, Calif.; Donovan Benoit, recruit playing in Cape Cod with Orleans Firebirds; B. Cellucci, pitcher; and Grant Mathews, drafted by Atlanta in Rd 38; are the only ones left unsigned at this point. I believe Tulane will keep 3 of those 4.

Perhaps Matthews and others see how Hoese's value went up exponentially when you can successfully move up from very late draftee to very early draftee. (Admittedly he is an extreme example.) However it might be a tie breaker in thinking for playing for Tulane versus going pro now.

Considering who we are losing this year, we could really use those 4 guys mentioned above. I believe Cellucci can increase his value above round no 10 next year, i.e. after next year he would possibly be drafted higher than round 12 and have a better chance to make more $$$$.

Don't know much about Benoit and Campbell but having a 6'-7" 1st baseman who can also hit and pitch would help.

Hopefully GMatt realizes he may be able to be drafted in a higher spot next year regardless of the money because he would not get mush $$$$ this year since he was drafted in the 38th round. (If Campbell can't play 1st, maybe GMatt could play there)

We'll see how it works out.

Being a senior next year means Mathews isn’t going to get much money next year even if he’s drafted much earlier.

I’d think Cellucci and Mathews are gone.

I saw where the Mets paid their 8th rounder a whopping $1000 signing bonus...there's no monetary argument to be made to return as a senior.
