I would think that's pretty accurate. I am sure we will see a change somewhere along the depth chart that most wouldn't have expected and maybe we'll have a freshman like Shak step up.
I tell you what, with Moses on the end and Mackey at the LB spot and Shak getting to go back to Safety where he belongs. I think on top of that, Stanard's defense (with which I have been impressed) I think we will see a big improvement in our total defense and points allowed. We have something to build on and a win against SMU would be a nice way to start 2010

This is very interesting. Thanks. A couple of things jump out at me.

1) For a ridiculously unproductive offense they have nearly 60% of the scholarships. As of now, the D will have only 35 scholarship players. This goes to what someone else opined earlier - we need to build a program based on D. Tough & physical D. A D that will give us a chance each game.

2) As has been stated by many, we are way low on #s at LB - 7 players (not counting Osag due to injury). If the #s stay the same, I would think this will force the coaches to move new recruits Bullock and Dejean here. Thinking outside the box, Echols with an extra 10 lbs would be a nice OLB and even Ponder with another 10 (depending on how physical he is) could be a fit.

3) With injuries/defections, looks like we'll have another 5 or so recruits. Emphasis on LB, S, TB in that order.

The offense is always going to have more scholarships than the defense. Always. You can't quite go four deep with 85 schollies. You will always need nine or ten guys at two positions, qb and your primary ball carrier. There isn't a position on defense that gets stockpiled like those two.

a couple of scans of the teams playing on TV right now:

Rutgers 56 on O, 52 on D.
Louisville 51 on O, 50 on D.
Cincy 44 on O, 48 on D.
Illini 53 on O, 42 on D.

This doesn't include longsnappers, P or K. Also assumes equal # of walk-ons.

Pretty even other than Illinois (about to be 3-8).

I'll stick by my assertion that 35 on D is way, way low.

FYI, I understand that his injury ended football for Osageide.

Okay I've made some changes to the roster.

I moved Ponder to QB, as Toledo said that on his show.
Also, I've put in the number of players on scholarship on O and D at this point.

I think D. Walker gets a scholarship. I've included him as one now.

As of now, including Walker and ALL the commmitments, we'd have 83 on scholarship. 45 on OFFENSE, 35 on DEFENSE and 3 on SPECIAL TEAMS.

i know what Toledo said but there is not way ponder goes back to QB unless Kemp transfers as someone else put out there today.

I am saying this based on young men keeping their Words and coming to Tulane
Griffin, Strauss, Bullock, Kemp and Moore - No room for Ponder and if I were Ponder I would mover to LB. Bullock is coming here to play QB, if he aint playing QB he wont be coming here unless the coaches can convince him that they need him at LB and that he is assuered time there, Bullock did an interview with The Wave Report and it was clear that he was going to college to play QB, and I agree with that based on his numbers and athletic ability and my DREAM of having a QB that can actually be a pocket passer while being a threat when he needs to run and giving us more of a diverse playbook in situations.

I was watching the cincy game today and the announcers said that Cincy had 1-3 LB's that were former HS-Athletic QB's, one a transfer from N.D. where he was a QB at N.D. and moved to LB at Cincy... so if Bullock likes to hit - then there is a great opportunity there - but that will be his choice - not a coaches. at 6-2 210 and very athletic it is an option that he should keep open.

I would expect 2-3 kids to leave based on the trend lately and really each year at a many schools you expect 2-4 guys to leave on their own, due to family concerns or whatever reason...

He would need to put on A LOT of weight. He's currently listed at 6-2, 194. Putting on 20 pounds would make him a small LB. Does he have the speed to play safety? Unless you run a 4.4, I really want LBs weighing at least 225, preferably 230-245.

i agree with you, but he will be bigger and stringer than the FR we have coming in. He is bigger than 194.. he is at least 210-215.

it was a long shot but I figured it was a shot/suggestion

If he's 210-215 then he can play LB and hopefully continue to grow.

i have no facts on that by the way - I just know that by seeing him recently I feel that there is no way he is 194 and he looks bigger than 194 - I could be very wrong with my luck - he is 185!

We recruited DeJean as a LB according to his interview on TWR. And if I was Ponder, I'd probably stick to baseball where he has a potential future as a pro, but that is just me.

Updated roster once again.

I kind of like the idea of Echols at LB.

Where does Jacks go? LB or DE? I'd love his speed off the edge particularly if he puts weight on this off season.
