Toledo hires Tom Hayes as Def backs coach. So much for hoping for Lionel Washington. At least we got rid of the LSU reject

Tulane football head coach Bob Toledo selects Tom Hayes to replace Greg Jackson on defensive staff
By Tammy Nunez, The Times-Picayune
March 13, 2010
When Tulane lost safeties coach Greg Jackson to Wisconsin about a week ago, Coach Bob Toledo vowed to fill the vacancy as quickly as possible. Toledo wanted someone in place for the open of spring football March 20.

It appears he found a good one in Tom Hayes, who was the New Orleans Saints defensive back coach in 2006. Hayes has an extensive background as a secondary coach and as a defensive coordinator. He was hired as Stanford's defensive coordinator in 2005. Hayes is a 1971 Iowa graduate and also coached a stint at the University of Kansas in 2001. He was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach and was named the Interim Head Coach for the final three games of the season.

Hayes spent five seasons (1995-99) as the secondary coach of the Washington Redskins. He coached NFL Pro Bowl players Darrell Green, Cris Dishman and Champ Bailey.

Hayes was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Oklahoma for four years (1991-94) and the assistant head coach and secondary coach at Texas A&M for two seasons (1989-90).

Hayes spent nine years at UCLA (1980-88). He was the secondary coach in the early 1980's. He was the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach from '82-'88. UCLA went to eight bowl games when he was a staff member, including three Rose Bowl victories, three Pacific-10 Conference championships and one Pac-10 co-championship.

Hayes also served as Cal State Fullerton's defensive coordinator and secondary coach (1979) and was the secondary coach at Iowa from 1977-78.

With less than a week remaining to the open of spring practice, the Tulane football offices were buzzing Monday with a host of interesting faces. Tom Hayes, the new defensive coach, was in attendence, already meeting with defensive coordinator Steve Stanard and his staff.

Hayes, who has a resume that out-scrolls the Torah, seems to already have meshed with the staff, and the group is hashing out terminology and ideology at the present. But yet another defensive mind was in on some of the Monday informal meetings. Nebraska secondary coach Marvin Sanders was hailed in by former Cornhusker Stanard to exchange some X's and O's
