We won the first half. I'm claiming victory in my post.

39-34 Tulane. Cam Reynolds with 13. Blake Paul was playing best game of his year but looked shaken up after landing weird on a big dunk.

39-34 until this gets locked and moved to the scoreboard (although, mods should probaby wait until after the game since i seriously doubt people care enough to go there to find a scoreboard thread)

Yeah, Paul hurting himself dunking when he looked great was a pretty Tulane-y thing to happen.

Smith just doesn't have good hands. Refs just calling it for the home team - pitiful. Tulane misses 11 of 14 shots.

Out scored by 16 in the second half - so far. Can't hit the front end of 1 & 1's..

Looks like a 20 pt. loss.

Memphis turned up the defense in the second half and Tulane wilted. Lawson is about as bad an individual matchup for Tulane as there is in the conference. Other than Melvin Frazier, Tulane has no players that can make a team like Memphis pay for the full court press.

I'm getting really tired of hearing that opponents "turned up the defense" in the second half. Like Memphis (or SMU, or ECU, or, or, or) wasn't trying hard in the first half. And why don't WE try turning up the defense in the second half? Memphis scored FIFTY-EIGHT POINTS in the second half last night. Outscored us by 27! That's like what UConn women do to opponents. There is no excusing that away with "well, Memphis just decided to try harder"... that shouldn't be happening against a team like Memphis.

The fact is, we have a clear problem with the second half of games. I don't know if it's lack of conditioning or what, but we reliably hit stretches where we can't hit the ocean from the beach, and our defense generally just disappears. I remember MD saying we'd be the best-conditioned team out there, so I can't imagine it's purely conditioning. At this point, with how many times it has happened, it has to be mental.

We've also had the reverse, where we were down big at half but win the second half, so it's not conditioning. It's a combination of the scoring droughts and lack of defense and rebounding. Put another way, our talent catches up to us.

By the way the foul disparity at one point in the second half was ridiculous. They put all our guys ins foul trouble while Memphis had like 7 total fouls in the game.

While the lull after the first two weeks of tough games in our schedule was disappointing, we've mostly played to our talent level overall this year. The last two to three weeks they've improved and played much better, until the second half of last nights game.

I posted this before but Dunleavy said the drop off in defense in the second half is because he isn't sitting by them directing them. In the second half, the players are more on their own.

I didn't hear it covered on the broadcast, but was it mentioned why Dunleavy and Tubby Smith were wearing their opponents' colors? Tubby had a bright green tie and jacket and MD had a blue checker coat with blue tie on. Seemed too planned to be coincidental. It may have been mentioned but I missed it if so.

Big Ez told me he did not intend this topic to be a scoreboard topic for the game, but rather to get pre-game chatter going. And since it has turned into post-game chatter, I have moved it back to the main forum.

Besides - any karma that led to the 2nd half performance needs to be reversed...

Carry on...

my humble observation is hat we lack quality depth and by the Second Half these guys begin to fade. Plus the other team makes adjustment at the half that we can't seem to be able to counter. So as I see it, its 1/3 lack of quality depth, 1/3 no Second Half counters to what the other team does and 1/3 mental.

So basically this program is the Buddy Teevens System of Basketball.

Nah, something along the lines of "Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical."

Buddy's problem wasn't lack of second half counters, it was overall lack of coaching throughout. And the depth he left TB didn't seem to be a problem.

or we need to change our pregame preparation?

"I usually take a two-hour nap from 1 to 4.", YB :-D

and Pete you're right quality depth wasn't a problem on those later Teevens teams.
