Generally those are just called “pinnies” (sp) that stretch over a PFD- great look with The Tulane pennant over the angry wave. Easier for teams to ID teammates in Team Racing events in addition to being your “uniform” when you compete at multi team events. Not sure if they are for sale or not, I have never seen them put up for sale at other schools...but I have never really looked, either.

I’m on a lifetime rehab of my language after those years in the Submarine Force. The first few weeks back from a deployment i wasn’t fit for company. I’m almost well now.

Note to the team: if you see a an approaching strange looking vessel with a tall black sail, give way. It’s a LOT bigger than it looks and the law of gross tonnage means you will lose, no matter what the nautical Rules of the Road says about right of way.

Rule 1: When you are on the same tack as the other boat, the leeward boat has the right-of-way.
Rule 2: When you are on opposite tacks, the starboard tack boat has the right-of-way.
Rule 3: If you are overtaking the other boat, or it is overtaking you, the boat ahead (the overtaken boat) has the right-of-way.

Rule 4: A fast attack submarine is as long as a football field and weighs 8,000 tons. She is single screwed, is constrained by her 34’ draft while surfaced, and has no maneuvering thrusters. Only the top 20% of her is visible while surfaced. The Thames River channel is narrow as is the channel enroute to Long Island Sound.

Rule 5: Should the question arise regarding sailing vessel right of way, being not under power, vs. a surfaced submarine being constrained by her draft, see Rule 4.

NB: in the days before 9/11 before armed escorts accompanied submarines in and out of port, I saw a sailing vessel which refused to heed warnings to stand to while in the Thames River, get washed over the back of a submarine and nearly swamped.

Racing in a river, back in the 70's and 80's we always planned far ahead to avoid near misses with ships. Right-of-way does not guarantee who comes out on top in a collision; the laws of Nature and and common sense trump the rules of the road. I saw a Flying Scot get run over by a barge. The sailors were very lucky to survive without injury; their boat did not survive at all. The tow boat was cutting through a race course that was established in the Notice to Mariners, so I'm sure the tug Captain drew some punishment, but if the sailors had not been strong swimmers, their future would have been in doubt.
