Dannen and Fritz to Kansas?

Post by washwave »

Per story in The Athletic:
https://theathletic.com/2488474/2021/03 ... -fired-up/

Dannen and Travis Goff (who I believe used to be at Tulane also) are the finalists for the AD job and it may be like the UCF AD that went to Tennessee and brought his football coach

I was always under the impression that it was considered bad form to hire from the school that you left, but maybe not anymore.

Travis is a real good dude! I hope he gets it for a number of reasons.

Goff was here until 2012. He is a Tulane MBA and KU undergrad alum. His wife is a Tulane alum as well. Would be a great replacement for Dannen, actually, if he would consider it!

What would be humorous would be TD to Kansas but Fritz decides to stay. Re the UCF comparison - Danny White absolutely tried to get several other coaches to come to UT before settling for Heupel.

If we have an AD search, it will be interesting to discuss candidates. I think Tulane is a better job than when TD got here and certainly he is an improvement over RD (not saying much). I really don't want to lose Fritz. While I've been hard on him to this point, this would be the absolute worst timing to lose a football coach and then have to replace him.

If Dannen left who'd be making our decisions? The baseball season ends with the AAC tournament which ends Memorial Day weekend. Certainly I'm not daunted by the prospect of him leaving. Only the prospect of looking for a head football coach after spring practice would worry me.

Beggars can't be choosers but if I was a Kansas fan, I'd find it hard to be excited about hiring a Tulane daily double.

Only because you fear Dannen doesn't care enough about baseball, right?

Kansas fans are already unexcited for football. The AD there is really Bill Self.

I know players’ opinions don’t always factor into a coach, but according to the article linked above, it sounds like the current Kansas players really like the interim coach.

The funny thing about that theory is that if it were as true as they think he'd be MORE likely to appease the supporters of that sport. Give 'em an alum or local boy and make them happy.

Side note: looks like regardless of which of the guys gets the job, we may have the opportunity to get KU on the schedules? Would be fun for me and my Jayhawk wife!

It’s important to me but regardless I don’t think TD has done anything that a lot of competent AD’s couldn’t do. He’s not setting the world on fire. Basketball is still bad and the 6-6 football seasons won’t be exciting much longer.

There you go actually interjecting logic again long green. I thought we spoke about that.

I don’t think I’ve ever said that TD doesn’t care about baseball. Other people definitely have and I guess I have wondered aloud if they’re correct . I’m just not sure that he knows much about it

Some might say it’s logical to assume that the only way TJ kept his job after years 1 and 2 was if the AD didn’t care much

That's fair. But I guess I'd be concerned if an AD was very concerned about baseball, or spent too much time knowing too much about it.

And I say that as someone who can honestly say baseball is my favorite sport (as a sport), and that I care far more about Tulane baseball than Tulane men's basketball. But I'd be concerned if the AD felt the same way.

True, we'd all become so jaded after such a long stretch of incompetence.

I'd say it can only be a good thing to have your AD and football coach poached by a P5, but then I'd see it was Kansas...
I wouldn't wish the coming Kansas sh!tshow on Dannen/Fritz, but if they ask for it, what can you do?

Seriously though, when have our AD/coach consistent been brought up as serious contenders for big jobs?

Maybe we can build more support for joining the Big 12!
