Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
He is currently the HC at Central Missouri.
He has spent a ton of time at lower levels. Also has a qb coaching background.

Looks like a solid hire. I like people who are hungry - and by hungry I mean has been at the lower levels for most of his career and wants to prove something on a bigger stage. He has a solid resume. Welcome to Tulane Coach Svoboda! Roll Wave!
I'm too lazy to look - anyone know what kind of offense he is currently running at Central Missouri?

If true, this link may not be up much longer:
https://ucmathletics.com/sports/footbal ... -svoboda/5
Very long resume....here's a short paragraph from it:
Svoboda served as UCLA’s quarterbacks coach from 2004-06, helping lead the Bruins to three bowl games and only their seventh 10-win season ever in that span. He served as the program’s offensive coordinator in 2006. UCLA won the 2005 Sun Bowl and upset second-ranked cross-town rival USC in 2006. For his efforts, he was a finalist for the 2005 Broyles Award, presented to the nation’s top assistant coach at the Division I-FBS level. He coached UCLA quarterback Drew Olson for two seasons, helping him set numerous school passing records, ranking second in the nation in touchdown passes, fifth in pass efficiency, and eighth in the 2005 Heisman voting.

Like Toledo, he coached at UCLA in the past.
Hopefully he comes in with a different kind of hunger.

Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
Why? Please expand and be specific. What was RR’s resume?
Lots of successful coaches have moved up food chain. Lots of those born with platinum resumes have failed. Just look at P5 turnover
We do know Fritz prefers coaches from humble backgrounds. They are used to doing more with less and are lower maintenance. They still have to perform
It’s now a numbers issue on coaching staff. Who is departing and/or getting demoted?
Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
Looks good to me
Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
Older coach who seemed to have a short but good stay at UCLA only to be banished back to the lower rungs of the game.

He’s older and hasn’t been around D1 players in over a decade. Not the greatest resume either. You need to look past his high scoring DII offense. He didn’t progress in the DI ranks for a reasonBaywave1 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 9:46 amWhy? Please expand and be specific. What was RR’s resume?

Didnt we all hate the cute trick plays and wish that we pounded the ball more? Conservative might be a good thing

This smacks of a head coach, Dorrell, trying to save his job by sacrificing a prominent assistant. Sometimes it works, but it didn't for Dorrell who was fired the next seasonJohnny Mac wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:03 am14 years agowavedom wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:02 am Too conservative- https://www.seattlepi.com/sports/articl ... 225840.php

Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
Thanks for the prompt reply. He’s at best there star like our top recruits. For Tulane to win AAC, he has to amp his game like our players. All tbdpurplehaz3 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 9:52 amBaywave1 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 9:46 amWhy? Please expand and be specific. What was RR’s resume?

Now back to numbers. Who is leaving off current staff?

Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
The biggest eyebrow-raiser is his age. He's older than Fritz by a couple of months. He has tons of QB coaching experience. Very likely had input on the two offensive hires we heard about yesterday. I wish he was young enough to give off a successor vibe if he turns out well. Conservative, if he is, doesn't bother me. We need to run the ball more.

Per Thamel’s tweet:
He’s a former OC and QB coach at UCLA, where he was a Broyles finalist in 2005. His Central Missouri team led DII in total offense in 2019.

At first glance this is just what the doctor ordered IMO. An OC at various schools and most importantly a developer of QBs. How will Pratt progress?

Re: Thamel reports our new OC will be Jim Svoboda
Lots to like and lots to question. As above, the main question is why did a guy who had UCLA rocking, and even beat then-power USC, end up all the way back in D2 for this long? If he had a few bad years you'd think he'd be demoted to like the MAC or even FCS, not all the way to D2.
I admit I haven't had a chance to read all the bios so maybe it's explainable. Just a first-glance curiosity.

Here is their stat sheet from 2019. Pretty balanced with a lean towards the run. They averaged 345 ypg passing and over 10 yds per attempt. If he cab duplicate that success, we will be very dangerous

His first job after UCLA was an FCS job as an OC. Then he became a D2 head coach.

And here is the 2021 stat sheet. More passing than rushing, less success all around. They went 4-7. Maybe they lost a lot from 2019?

in 2019, Shea Wyatt had over 1400 yds receiving average 22+ yards per catch.tulaneoutlaw wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:48 am Here is their stat sheet from 2019. RR was in his early 30s; he's in his early 60s.
Anyway, he's got some UCLA experience too. Interesting hire.

I have big expectations for Wyatt next season. Maybe this will help those expectations come to fruition.MNAlum wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:57 amin 2019, Shea Wyatt had over 1400 yds receiving average 22+ yards per catch.tulaneoutlaw wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:48 am Here is their stat sheet from 2019.
