I think Ellen DeGeneres was a gimmick, but unfortunately, that's what this thing has turned into.
As for Anderson Cooper, his choice as speaker can be defended on grounds that he is a respected broadcast journalist. I would guess that his politics are left of center but I can't think of anything he has ever broadcasted that would say that is so and you sure as heck can't. He can also be defended on the grounds that he was VERY prominent with his Katrina coverage. He is very well known, a credible professional in his field, and quite relevant to New Orleans and, therefore, Tulane.
