Bands to Battle at the Boot
March 16, 2010

by Mary Cross
On Saturday (March 20) beginning at 7 p.m., the Boot will serve as a battleground as local bands participate in a competition hosted by the Tulane chapter of the professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. Student and community bands will rock out for a good cause — proceeds will fund the fraternity's education and community service programs and scholarship awards.

The night's lineup features The Acadias, Spite, State Street Survivors and other promising local acts. Bands will each play for 30 minutes in hopes of pleasing the rock gods and winning prizes that will be given to the top three bands of the night, as determined by the audience.

The prizes include two hours in a professional recording studio, a $200 gift certificate to Jim Russell Records, a $100 gift certificate to the Mushroom, and a collection of goodies from Community Records.

Marne Braddock, vice president of fundraising for Alpha Kappa Psi, describes the event as an opportunity for students and local music lovers to support both the fraternity and bands emerging in the New Orleans music scene.

"We live in the music capital of the world, so the focus is simply on people coming together for a good time," Braddock says.

The Acadias will be the first act of the night. With a folk-rock sound, the band "aims for a warm and enjoyable experience for the audience," says drummer Andy Lade. A Tulane junior, Lade views the event as a chance to showcase the band's versatile talents, rather than focusing on winning the battle. "The sense of competition is not what's desired from this experience, it's the giving activity of putting on a show for the audience."

Admission for the event is $3
