I am the biggest Saints fan on the planet, but this is as contrived as it gets. It's one thing to have Drew Brees speak at a Commencement, someone who can add good insight on life as an undersized, under-appreciated overachiever. But to bring out a random player, coach, and the owner to do a cheer and give them medals? 2/3 of the graduates probably have no allegiance to the Saints at all.
Come on Cowen, you can do better.

Re: Honestly
As long as they overshadowed that twerp, Anderson Cooper, it is all right with me to bring out the Saints' ballboy.

As anyone knows who reads my posts before they are routinely deleted I am not a big fan of Anderson Cooper but he gave a very good commencement speech Saturday. Much better than Brian Williams a couple of years back. he turned out to be a good choice in my opinion.
Re: Honestly
Anderson Cooper has the news anchor at one of the top news organizations in the world and has been a strong, strong advocate of New Orleans since Katrina.

The school's newly-minted alums delivered their loudest clapping and hollering to three surprise attendees: New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and executive vice president Rita Benson LeBlanc, who all received medals from President Scott Cowen honoring their win in Super Bowl XLIV.

Re: Honestly
Sorry. Guess I'm a traditionalist. I'm not saying Commencement Exercises need to be boring, but they need to focus on the graduates and accomplishments of the school. Why couldn't they have rolled out the CUSA Championship Women's BBall team? Or a Greek skit (despite the fact I hated the Greeks). Or some other accomplished grad. It seems to be all about name recognition and the show - Ellen, Anderson Cooper, who's next, Lady Gaga?
I'm all for fun, but Saints and Tulane have essentially no link outside of the stadium they play in. That all being said, I'm sure if I had been in the crowd, I would have reacted the same as they did.
Call it being an old fogey, I guess!

Or, oh, the City of New Orleans.doncecco wrote:

The Saints, owned by a rich car salesman who lives in San Antonio has a connection with the people of New Orleans; the Green Wave, attended by kids from families of the upper middle class (primarily) from all over the country, including New Orleans, has lost the connection in the last decade or 2.
And we should have a much bigger link.

Cr@p...where were all those guys when I was living off of my $100/month NROTC stipend back in the 70s? Sure would have liked to have some upper middle class roommates . I could have used a good meal when the parents came to town!GSx wrote:...the Green Wave, attended by kids from families of the upper middle class (primarily) from all over the country, including New Orleans...

Whats your knock on Cooper? I rarely watch CNN because I get annoyed with all of that "ireport" crap, but what little I've heard about Cooper has been good. And I know that he was pretty pro N.O. post-Katrina.Peter Berg wrote:As anyone knows who reads my posts before they are routinely deleted I am not a big fan of Anderson Cooper but he gave a very good commencement speech Saturday. I don't have a problem with AC. I think he's a dweeb but he's a good catch for commencement.

Re: Honestly
Considering how much the guy has linked or associated his career with "keeping them honest" in NOLA, I would say his commencement invitation was appropriate. He cares about NOLA more than just about any journalist who is not from Louisiana.

Might add Rachel Maddow to that. Say what you will about her overall (I don't watch her enough to have a strong opinion either way), she is definately about as pro New Orleans as you can get.Pelican Power wrote:Considering how much the guy has linked or associated his career with "keeping them honest" in NOLA, I would say his commencement invitation was appropriate.
