Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any meetings that would introduce the coaches, cheerleaders and players of all Tulane sports and instructions about how to interact with them and information on the importance of attending games and supporting the teams. Why wouldn't you do something like that?

Maybe they'll have a Pep Rally & Bonfire next week and burn Dixie beer case boxes -Cheerleader wrote:Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any meetings that would introduce the coaches, cheerleaders and players of all Tulane sports and instructions about how to interact with them and information on the importance of attending games and supporting the teams. Wow. I’m very impressed.
Maybe all colleges do that now but in August 1974 it was get picked up at the airport by some fraternity whose invitation you got in the mail, to be deposited at Phelps, a handshake from the suite advisor, and then stumble around campus in shock for a couple of hours. Then being a NROTC scholarship student it was right into their routine including haircuts by that old barber in the UC basement. I do remember winding up at the Boot that first night.
Honestly, this is so much more squared away. I’d say if you don’t get rolling right away now as a freshman, then you just aren’t equipped.

That honestly doesn't look too different from my day. The thing was, no one attended a lot of those things... You only went to a couple here or there. I suspect a lot of it was around in y'all's day too, you just didn't go either so you've forgotten.

Nowadays most of them go to most of the scheduled things because they scare the crud out of them and they are too new to college to realize there isn't any real enforcement to go. That said, they go to so many things, have so much stuff thrown at them, that pretty much stop listening halfway through the first day. Sometimes less is more. But dont try to tell a corporation university that

The difference 30 years makes. Today they need to have their hand held and be told every step of everything that is going to happen or else they'll be helpless; in my day we were just like, "ppffttt, I'm not a child, I'll figure it out on my own. Now which way to that frat house I heard had a few kegs tapped?"WaveProf wrote:Nowadays most of them go to most of the scheduled things because they scare the crud out of them and they are too new to college to realize there isn't any real enforcement to go. This had nothing to do with fraternities but I went to a keg party in that exact area my first night at Tulane as well! It was a house rented by buddies of our hall RA, and the basketball team got early check-in, so it was just us and the RAs on the hall and they brought us along.gerryb323 wrote:Right through the fence behind Monroe was the keg party my first night!PeteRasche wrote:The difference 30 years makes. Mostly agree with this sentiment, but I'd put the blame on their parents' generation, not theirs. Most of the students are eye rolling at most of the meetings, and would much prefer to be left alone. But when an entire generation of parents has insisted on being involved in every aspect of their child's life their whole life, on up through high school, and wants to hold their hand for everything, that becomes the system. And the system is what they were raised with. And at 18 they all may be about ready to rebel, but they ain't gonna have the guts to do it weekend one.PeteRasche wrote:Today they need to have their hand held and be told every step of everything that is going to happen or else they'll be helpless; in my day we were just like, "ppffttt, I'm not a child, I'll figure it out on my own. It’s a tough line parents have to walk now. Part of it is self induced. Part of it is an overreaction to 24/7 media which says the world is a monstrous place and the moat is just outside your front door. Ask any parent on here if Brendan or Madison would be allowed to ride their bike, unsupervised and untethered, anywhere outside of visual distance from their front steps. I didn’t think so. It goes against everything we are taught now but kids must be allowed to fail, to scrape their knees, to not be #1, to not be so soft. I tried to take my grandsons from Metroplex Dallas on a walking tour of Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago and they were too tired after a half mile because they have always been driven everywhere. Eighteen years of that and you have a college freshman.

One of the biggest adjustments my 7 yo has when he comes back to NOLA in August from the Basque Country, is being reminded he has to always stay in eye distance (or closer). If we gave him the independence and freedom here that he gets there, we'd (at best) get looks of judgement or (at worst) have someone call the cops for child endangerment. The irony being that the amount of independence we give him there is 1) normal there 2) probably still more restrictive than what my wife and I grew up with 30 years ago. our society has just moved that far, that fast.TUPF wrote:Ask any parent on here if Brendan or Madison would be allowed to ride their bike, unsupervised and untethered, anywhere outside of visual distance from their front steps.
