New Dean of Newcomb-Tulane College

Post by WaveProf »

Dear Tulane Community:

It is our great pleasure to inform you that Dr. Lee Skinner, Professor of Spanish at Claremont McKenna College, has accepted appointment as Tulane's new Dean of Newcomb-Tulane College, effective July 1, 2019. In addition to her role as dean, she will be joining the faculty of the Tulane Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Lee currently serves as the Associate Dean of the Faculty at Claremont McKenna, a position she has held since 2013. Claremont McKenna, one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges, is one of seven institutions that make up the Claremont Colleges. The Claremont Colleges routinely coordinate and share resources, and Lee is widely respected and admired throughout the Claremont system as an extremely effective, enthusiastic, collaborative leader.

In the role of Associate Dean, Lee has been an impactful administrator and an unwavering advocate for undergraduate students and for the quality of their educational experience. Passionate about undergraduate education and student success, she has worked with faculty to implement new curricula, created programs that allow faculty and students to come together in new and meaningful ways, led several initiatives dedicated to creating a more diverse and inclusive educational environment, and oversaw a robust program of faculty advisors and mentors.

Lee earned her bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from Brown University, and her Ph.D. in Spanish from Emory University. She served on the faculty of the University of Kansas, and received tenure there, before being recruited to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Claremont McKenna in 2008. A scholar of Latin American Literature with a specialty in the study of national identity in 19th-century Spanish America, Lee has authored two monographs, History Lessons: Refiguring the Nineteenth-Century Historical Novel in Spanish America (Newark, 2006) and Gender and the Rhetoric of Modernity in Spanish America, 1850-1910 (Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2016). Lee also received an award during her time at the University of Kansas for excellence in teaching.

Please join us both in welcoming Lee to Tulane and in thanking Kelly Grant for her service as Interim Dean of NTC following the departure of longtime Dean James MacLaren last year. Kelly carried out this challenging role with unwavering ambition for our students and for the institution, and her contributions far exceed what one could have expected for anyone in an interim role. We want to also express our gratitude to the search advisory committee, and its chair Joe Keating, for their thoughtful support throughout this process. They brought a sense of rigor and enthusiasm to this process that allowed them to both provide thoughtful guidance and serve as wonderful ambassadors for the university.

“We will expect success in all endeavors and be prepared to assess and hold ourselves accountable when we aren't successful. Tulane is a top 40 academic institution and it should expect nothing less from its athletic department.” --Troy Dannen 11.5.16
