Temple may be losing their coach

Post by long green »

Geoff Collins is reported to be in ATL talking with Tech right now. Once you do that, you'd better close the deal.

Whisenhunt removed his name. They seem to be focusing on Collins.

Collins was indeed hired by GT.

some people will do anything to get out of a trip to Shreveport. (seriously, wonder who Temple will target as their next head man?); Lance Leipold of Buffalo would be an intriguing name.

I agree. Leipold would be the first name I'd look at, though there are others.

Personnel and coaching transition to "Pro style" offense will make an interesting year(s) for GT fans. Too bad we don't have GT on the schedule anymore. However Temple does in Philly next year.

I'd look at Chip Long, OC at Notre Dame.

They hire Manny Diaz, the DC at Miami.

He was really good at Miami. It’ll be interesting to see what he can do without South Florida talent. His defenses blitz, blitz and then blitz some more.

Who says he can't recruit South Florida at his new job?

I count 13 Florida players on their current roster. They are understandably heavy in PA and NJ, but it seems like they've already made some good inroads in Florida. Diaz should only strengthen that.

That’s not what I meant. I worded it poorly. He’s not going to have the same talent at Temple.

Not going to be playing Clemson either, so it's all relative.

Not so much at Texas -
In 2012, Diaz guided the Texas Longhorns to the worst defense in school history. On September 7, 2013, the Longhorns' defense, under Diaz, gave up a school record 550 yards rushing to Brigham Young University, including 257 to quarterback Taysom Hill. The following day, Mack Brown described the defensive performance as "unacceptable" and relieved Diaz of his duties as defensive coordinator.

A lot of that had to do with the situation at Texas with Mack Brown, but you’re right, his defense wasn’t good there.

Also, it was Taysom Hill. They did well to hold him to 257

Temple’s last 4 head coaches have gone on to be HC at Miami, Boston College, Baylor and Georgia Tech. A lot of people think Manny replaces Richt at Miami

They probably didn't think it would be this soon.

Diaz has a $4M buyout clause at Temple and has been OTJ for 18 days.

This should be interesting.

Why? Miami writes a check out of petty cash.

Assuming he had a signed contract, I guess Temple can play for a couple of years in the Eagles stadium courtesy of Miami. (Rent charged Temple football is in another stratosphere.)

If still being drafted, I guess lawyers will work out some type of compromise.

Combine this with RR going to Ole Miss, it's a compliment to Fritz and Hall that he stayed as TU's OC.

Temple is on its second 1-yr. extension to its contract to play in the Linc for $1M/year plus expenses through the 2019 season. There was talk that the Linc folks wanted to double the rent plus a $12M upfront fee earlier this season but I have seen no reports since then on status beyond 2019. Now would be the time to fish or cut bait.

There is impetus to build an on campus stadium but site would be a problem in downtown Philly plus the projected $130M building cost. Opposition is formidable from a number of fronts.

So even with this buyout money flowing in there is a lot to consider.
