France England would have provided fodder for countless memes. I had to look up Croatia to see what part of old Yugoslavia it contains.

I still say speed kills so liking France to hoist that ridiculously little trophy.

Some news about Qatar world cup coming out. They are moving the tournament to a winter schedule, which will really hurt the major European professional leagues. They are also wanting to go with 48 team rather than 32. That expansion will already happen in 2026, so this would move that up four years.

What a mess.

Ok, I'm almost over the WC. I'm loving the youngsters we've got for the next cycle. Guys like Weah, Sargent, McKinnie, Adams, Steffan, and, of course, Pulisic, who was there last cycle at the end. Two friendlies coming up in the next two weeks against Colombia and Peru.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Atlanta United FC; 58/0), Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge/BEL; 2/0), Zack Steffen (Columbus Crew SC; 6/0)

DEFENDERS (8): John Brooks (Wolfsburg/GER; 34/3), Reggie Cannon (FC Dallas; 0/0), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Swansea City/WAL; 5/0), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls; 0/0), Matt Miazga (Nantes/FRA; 9/1), Antonee Robinson (Wigan Athletic/ENG; 4/0), Ben Sweat (New York City FC; 0/0), DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle United/ENG; 54/0)

MIDFIELDERS (10): Kellyn Acosta (Colorado Rapids; 19/1), Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls; 7/1), Jonathan Amon (Nordsjælland/DEN; 0/0), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC/CAN; 140/17), Julian Green (Greuther Fürth/GER; 12/4), Weston McKennie (Schalke/GER; 6/1), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund/GER; 21/9), Kenny Saief (Anderlecht/BEL; 2/0), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew SC; 8/0), Tim Weah (Paris Saint-Germain; 5/1)

FORWARDS (3): Andrija Novakovich (Fortuna Sittard/NED; 2/0), Josh Sargent (Werder Bremen/GER; 3/1), Bobby Wood (Hannover 96/GER; 41/12)

Worthy of debate for sure. The very late goals.

While it doesn't look good, the pool system means that goal differential has a real significance. Sweden is supposed to outman Thailand as well and could very well put up a high score.

late goals weren't the issue.. the over the top celebration for late goals... especially Wambaugh's goal (which was 10th).

It's fine to score.. but doing choreographed celebrations is a88clownery.

FIFA should cap goal differential at + or - 5.

BBC was opining that what it showed was that Thailand had no business being in a World Cup and that perhaps how some teams qualified for the Women's World Cup ought to be looked at.

there were comments along those lines from Americans, as well.. that FIFA needs to do a better job of making sure there are enough good teams in the organization to be worthy of this tournament
