'It Was Foolish'
Mark McGwire is finally ready to talk about the past. The slugger who boosted baseball's popularity during the dramatic home run race in 1998 says he was fueled by steroids for years

Re: FINALLY! Mark McGwire Admits It!
Is McGwire still going to be a coach for the Cardinals? If so, then I think this is a preemptive strike on the part of the Cardinals. By getting this out there and getting McGwire out where he can handle this now, the Cards can keep (or try to keep) their spring training from becoming a circus.
The other explanation, that this is part of McGwire's rehabilitation so he can one day get in the Hall, is less likely because of the extent of the self-revelation. His whole career and every one of his major league home runs can be called into question now. Bonds was a cheater but would have been a first ballot HoFer anyway. Take away the juice and McGwire is Adam Dunn.

Re: FINALLY! Mark McGwire Admits It!
There's gotta be a better comparison than that. For one, without the juice, McGwire probably wouldn't have half the HRs that Dunn has (Dunn actually has an astonishing amount). But more than anything, I don't recall McGwire striking out nearly as much as Dunn... McGwire, hate him all you want, had a pretty decent eye at the plate. Dunn still looks clueless against a halfway-decent pitcher; I attribute his HR totals more the the watering-down of Major League pitching as a whole.long green wrote:Take away the juice and McGwire is Adam Dunn.
McGwire used to be a tall, lanky kid with decent power and decent outfielding skills. How about.... Paul O'Neill?

Good. Paul O'Neil it is. A solid major leaguer but no Hall of Famer.

Re: FINALLY! Mark McGwire Admits It!
Paul O'Neill, of the career high 28 HRs? That really came out of left field. McGwire (49 HRs as a rookie in 1987) has been a first baseman his entire career. And Dunn has a very good eye at the plate...note all the walks. I think Dunn's actually a pretty good comparison for a non-juiced McGwire...low average, high power, high obp.PeteRasche wrote:There's gotta be a better comparison than that. I am embarrassed that I forgot that McGwire was always a first baseman.

Did I hear on ESPN radio this morning that McG may have also been doing some kind of drug that supposedly improved hand/eye coordination? Don't know if such a thing exists...or if that was just some kind of drive-time radio host conjecture.PeteRasche wrote:McGwire, hate him all you want, had a pretty decent eye at the plate.

Wow, if that existed, that would be a threat to LOTS of sports. And probably more of a threat than the "get big and muscle-bound" type of PEDs.TUPF wrote:Did I hear on ESPN radio this morning that McG may have also been doing some kind of drug that supposedly improved hand/eye coordination? There are all these rumors about Tiger Woods taking PEDs and the "experts" dismiss them because "muscles would hurt your golf game", but if this (above) is the case, wow, what a mess that would cause in the sports world.
Of course, maybe I'm just in denial, but I still believe that the main reason that MOST of these people took PEDs was to more quickly recover from injuries. Not Bonds and McGwire, but many of the others named.
By the way, my brain wasn't functioning too well when I compared McGwire to Paul O'Neill. I don't know why I was picturing McGwire in the outfield!!
Re: FINALLY! Mark McGwire Admits It!
Not implicating Tiger in any way, but that's the same thing the "experts" said about baseball also. The fact is that being bigger, stronger and better able to recover would help you in any sport, to say nothing of the confidence/mental edge you would gain.PeteRasche wrote:There are all these rumors about Tiger Woods taking PEDs and the "experts" dismiss them because "muscles would hurt your golf game", but if this (above) is the case, wow, what a mess that would cause in the sports world.
