America's Cup

Post by Roller »

in keeping with the discussion of a reported pending announcement of the formation of a Tulane Sailing Team, it is timely to mention that the America's Cup finals will begin on Saturday, June 17. TV coverage will be provided by NBC Sports.

Emirates, representing New Zealand, took the Louis Vitton Cup over Alinghi, repesenting Sweden.

With that victory, Emirates earned the right to challenge the defending USA, represented by Oracle. The series will be a rematch of the last AC (in 2013), in which Oracle fell behind, 1 race to 8, but plowed their way wack to take the Cup, 9-8.

If you haven't had a chance watch the AC-50 catamarans race, do yourself a favor and tune in. They are marvels of engineering flying (literally!) along on hydrofoils, a few feet above the water at 30 knots or more.

Well said Roller. Here's the US Cat black sails and all. Competitive sailing is a thrill and doing it at 30+ knots is 'insane'.

Slight thread hijack.

I saw a kite surfer last season using a hydrofoil-equipped board in a heavy wind with moderate surf. It was a sight to behold seeing him about 3' above the water screaming along. There was an onshore van full of equipment monitoring and filming so they could take performance data.
