Safety Alohi Gilman transfers from Navy to Notre Dame out of desire to play in the NFL, gets a letter basically ripping him apart (coward, disgrace, questionable academic record, military probably better off without you, getting beat by Clemson shows how mediocre you are) by "six veterans and college football fans". of course, those who wrote the letter didn't sign their names.

EVERY fan base has them.

Yes. We saw lots of stories in the past several weeks about the Clemson star end signed out of Alabama despite Saban's best recruiting efforts. I simply remember the quote from him expressing astonishment and disbelief about the vile things written about him on the internet by some Bama fans who were "grown men," because he chose Clemson.

Any Service Academy or scholarship ROTC cadet or midshipmen can leave school, no questions asked, before commencing their junior year. They owe no payback. Many leave for a variety of reasons. Believe me, both the cadet or midshipman who leaves and the military itself are better off. As an officer you better be 100% committed.

The folks who wrote the letter are @ssholes. Like long green said, every fan base has them.

I guess the real question is "does this guy even have a shot?" If he's just an average player who may be on the 2nd team at ND, then I question the move. If service after football was the issue, then why invoke the NFL in your excuse?

I did think it was funny that 6 people who called him a coward remain anonymous.

Why not just send him a white feather?

Johnny, Gilman started every game for the Irish this past season. He is a heck of a player.

During my stint we only had one out of 120 or so full scholarship students leave before his junior year. He resigned after summer training following sophomore year, so he already had completed a lot of difficult stuff. It’s not for everyone.
