Sean McVay

Post by Johnny Mac »

Saints are about to kick off in an hour.. until then, a little Tulane related history involving the Rams' head coach.

Sean is the son of my former boss at the Atlanta TV station I worked at.. his dad was our General Sales Manager.. before Sean was a senior in HS, he was getting cursory college interest, but nothing major. Miami (OH) was the biggest program after him since his uncle had played there (his dad played for Lee Corso at Indiana). Before Sean's senior season, he contracted mono, and was told he had to skip the entire year. His dad took him to a chiropractor who specialized in holistic medicine and through a series of treatments, removed all traces of mono in Sean within a week.. his season was saved... and he eventually led his team to the state title.

At the end of the year, I kept teasing his dad that Sean should look into Tulane.. well apparently Giff Smith agreed (without my recommendation) and started recruiting Sean. At that point, Scelfo had a verbal commit from 4 star DL Frank Morton who was from just east of where Sean played. Frank pushed Sean into committing to Tulane.. which he did. Sean was set to sign with us until Giff Smith got hired away by Tech before signing day...Sean signed with Miami (OH).

Not sure how Sean's career would have turned out under Scelfo.. but we were very close to getting him into the Green Wave fold. I doubt many of you know this story, outside of JtS and maybe DonnyZ.

Rooney rule prevents it... In my case the Mickey Rooney rule.

Being lazy and not googling it since you probably know off the top of your head, what years would he have been at Tulane and who would his QB competition have been in those days? And what happened to Frank Morton?
