What scandal?

Post by OGSB »

NEW ORLEANS -- We probably should have known this LSU football team was destined for greatness last August with the explosive revelation that an LSU booster named John Paul Funes had pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $800,000 dollars from a hospital charitable foundation, including gift cards meant for cancer patients.

Among the reasons Funes got caught? He had directed $180,000 of the foundation’s money to the father of Vadal Alexander, an LSU offensive lineman at the time, as part of a scheme to make it appear as though the father was working for the foundation. He had also flown friends and family to LSU games on the foundation's dime, trips that were logged as "outbound patient transports.”
At his sentencing in October that month, Funes apologized for his "awful and senseless" crimes,” according to The Advocate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In December, he reported to a federal prison in Indiana for a 33-month sentence. His final Tweet before going to jail came a few days after LSU’s win over Alabama, when he quoted sportscaster Rich Eisen from an interview with LSU coach Ed Orgeron: “Man, we're all just paying rent in your world right now.”

On Monday, the Tigers he loved so much he almost certainly broke NCAA rules to help will play Clemson for the national championship. Hey, if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.
All these months later, the Funes story has all but disappeared from the public consciousness, if it was even there to begin with.

First I've heard of this. I don't even recall it making this forum. I wonder if Clemson fans have heard about it.
In fact, if the confetti falls on LSU Monday night, no one is going to know or care that the school has spent much of the past year being looked at by the NCAA enforcement staff in both football and men’s basketball as a result of both the Funes case and FBI wiretapped phone calls between hoops coach Will Wade and the middleman for a sport’s agent. During LSU’s run to the SEC title and the College Football Playoff, it hasn’t even been brought up once.
Nothing like stealing from a cancer charity to help "those who need it most". Funes will be sitting in jail tonight watching the game on TV and probably thinking it was all worth it, too.

Yup. It's everywhere.

Does the NCAA have the cojones to do anything about it? I'll bet an OBJ wad of cash the answer is NOPE.

LoSer-U is already claiming it's fake money. You know, kind of like NCAA standards and rules....

What would be the point of handing out fake money? That's not even a sensible publicity stunt, it would be comical and embarrassing.

But as long as LSU says it's fake, the NCAA will trust them and nothing will happen.

Meanwhile everyone here is excited that our future QB didn't get hurt in his last college game (though drafting Chase Young wouldn't be the end of the world).

It's some really convincing looking fake money from the pictures I've seen. Secret Service might want to have a talk with OBJ.

NBC calls out the ridiculousness of the fake money claim but at the same time says the NCAA should do nothing about it.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2 ... -fake/amp/

If they indeed don't, what's to stop the wealthy alumni of this year's basketball tourney from doing the exact same thing? "yeah, yeah, we saw OBJ and thought it was funny so we're doing the same thing. It's all fake!"

I'm sure they'll produce the fake money by Thursday by 8PM to "prove" it was fake (Just don't check their Prime Order History).

The NCAA will play the bad guy and tell Beckham to stay away, which after Monday is just what LSU wants. They won't do anything else.
The gap between the top of the big leagues and their bottom is now bigger than the gap between their bottom and us - P.R. told me to do this

So what does Miss Manners say is the appropriate number of days LSU must wait before issuing the public statement that they've completed their investigation and determined that money was only retained by players who are graduating and all money given to potential returning players has been mailed back to Mr. Beckham along with a stern letter of admonishment to "never do that again"?

Isn’t Burrow and others still on athletic scholarships? NCAA won’t give a shiat regardless. They have the Wade precedent to fall back on.

So far what we know:
- He handed out what Burrow called “real money”
- He was escorted from the band section in the stands after the game for causing a disruption trying to get them to play Neck*
- He now has a warrant issued for a battery charge after slapping a cop’s ass in the locker room

*in the video he appears “accidentally” touch one of the a golden girls’ asses while trying to climb the seats to get to the band.

Do they want that? Sure, Beckham appears to be a total clown, but I'm guessing that played pretty well with recruits.

Doesn't matter for those whose careers are finished. The minute the final gun sounded Burrow could do what he wanted. He could sign with an agent that night and get a suitcase full of money on national TV.

After we got knocked out of the NCAA in 1993, the 5 graduating guys from my class who were done didn't have to go with the rest of us (I'd redshirted so I still had another year) to our team activity that night. Some of the parents took them out drinking in Orlando. They were no longer under any coach's rules.

To me the craziest thing is that by NCAA rule, even though basketball players have more than half of their senior second semester during season, they still only need to have one class (4 hours) in that final semester to be eligible. My senior year (5th year, so I had all my prerequisites done) second semester all I had was a 4-hour independent study with my professor. Perfectly legal.
