i think people thought it would be a strength relative to the hitting. both were unknowns going into the season

Bates has settled down after the first two innings.

Hitting back-to-back batters and giving up two homers in two innings is not a good plan. But he's got something like 8 Ks, mostly in the latest innings. And his ball still looks good, so hopefully he can go another inning, despite having thrown 70+ pitches.
