What happened to retiring the names of hurricanes?

The first Isaac wasn't considered major enough to merit retiring the name. This is acts a reminder that even "less severe" hurricanes can be very damaging.

Wilmington NC is going to get hammered.. Charlotte will get a tropical storm for sure... my wife is already in panic mode... we have 24 gallons of water (we are on a well and if we lose power, we have no water).. I am heading out to get more propane because our cook top is electric. I am hoping being overprepared will save us!
Scrub your bathtub, and fill it up before the storm hits.

You're pretty far inland, though, so it's doubtful you'll get more that TS winds, if that. My wife is in Winston with her mother, and people there are getting nervous, too. But I think y'all are good, that far inland (I mean, like, how worried do Shreveport and Jackson ever get?).

The bathtub thing is a good idea even if just to flush toilets

way ahead of both of you.. I bought Lowe's 5 gallon buckets for Irma last year for the specific purpose of scooping tub water and dumping it in the toilet tanks to flush...

the storm's track looks like Charlotte will only experience mild tropical storm level winds but a sheet ton of rain... so any power outage will hopefully be short lived and a local issue.

Looks like next week would be a great time for a bunch of southeastern Tulane fans to come up to Ohio. Just sayin'.

Meteorologist on the NBC station here in Charlotte had that very possibility out there last night... I don't wish any ill on the folks of Charleston, but that path would pretty much leave CLT unscathed.. and the only scathing we are set to receive with the current path is 7-11 inches of rain in 2.5 days... I could do without that

Since this one is now located in the Gulf of Mexico, it is the one (without any name yet) we should be focused on right now. Stay tuned.

But I have two friends who live in Alma, GA near Waycross, who are emergency personnel and, depending on that fickle Florence, could be in harms way if it heads that way, so I am also for them also.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Fan since '54

It is not a thing to be worried about if you live in SE LA. Maybe some rain. I noticed they discontinued further warnings from Isaac 2.0 which is the one to watch (was?).

Wind shear is supposed to knock it down to a depression by Monday afternoon, which is good news.

Bob Breck:

Quote:
The affect from Florence for us is to build a surface high that will dry us out and block any northward movement of a rotation over the southern Gulf. There are no storms around that system tonight, but NHC is giving it a 70% chance to develop Friday into Saturday over the western Gulf. The only impact to us will be stronger winds, especially off the Louisiana coast. Way out in the Atlantic, Isaac continues to struggle with wind shear and might not survive much longer. For us, there is news that the MJO will move into the unfavorable (sinking air) phase during the next week and that should shut down the tropical activity that has made for an active September. Doesn’t mean the hurricane season is over for us, but October is only 3 weeks away. I have placed a call into the “Fat Lady” to see if she’s getting ready to do her yearly song…”turn out the lights…”

I like the post a few down from that where he says:
Quote:
Why do reporters reporting on hurricanes have to stand out in the wind and rain? We know that there’s a lot of rain and high winds in a hurricane. Reporters reporting on a house fire don’t stand in the fire.

I tuned into the Weather Channel this morning to see some announcer in knee deep water with a batting helmet on. Michael Dukakis and his too big tanker helmet came to mind. Both looked ridiculous.

Having said that, it’s the rain. It always was the rain. The pain is just beginning for the Carolinas.

The Weather Channel responded (weakly):

Quote:
“It’s important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking on concrete, and Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass, after reporting on-air until 1:00 a.m. ET this morning and is undoubtedly exhausted,” the network said.

It's pretty evident that TWC has now fallen prey to the dumbing down of America via reality TV. Their reporters are being JUST. PLAIN. STUPID.

As you know they sensationalize thier reporting. There are so many cameras out there now that they either catch more sensational things or show soemone walking their dog right next to where Jim Cantore is standing and acting as if the wind is about to pick him up like the wicked witch of the west.
