New Zealand river first in the world to be given............

Post by GreenieBacker »

..........legal human status

A river in New Zealand has become the first in the world to be granted the same legal rights as a person.

The New Zealand parliament passed the bill recognising the Whanganui River, in North Island, as a living entity.

Long revered by New Zealand's Maori people, the river's interests will now be represented by two people.

I love the fact it counts the same as two living people. Makes me wonder how they came up with that number. Why not three or thirty?

This. I would make the argument for it counting as zero. I can at least see the argument for it counting for a lot, equal to a micro civilization. Two? Say what? that's just weird.

I find this action by the Parliament to be disgusting, but not out of line with much of the stupidity rampant in the modern world.

Hey, it's their fault! There are simply too many Parliaments in the world, and they chose to contribute to the confusion!

(love their stuff, btw)

So does the River get 2 votes in the next Parliamentary election? If so, imagine the possibility for incumbents. Humanize everything, proxy their vote, and you may be re-elected for life!

I wonder also will they use non-gender specific pronouns to identify the River(s)?

Thought crosses my mind of what Trump might humanize, but I would be surely deleted.....

Despite the yuckfest and knee jerk reaction here, I bet most haven't even read why those folks did this.

To quote Mr. Chow in Hangover II..."it's effing genius!" Instead of environmentalists trying to protect a river piecemeal, you make it have the rights of a person and suddenly tools to protect it are myriad.

So laugh it up. I remember rivers catching fire. It's not pretty. 8)

Is it man and a woman - two men or two women - what about transrivers? There are some issues here.

Laws like this benefit lawmakers and lawyers. They are the real winners here.

This morning I gave legal human status to my closet. From now on it will count as three people and will have a vote on what goes in my closet. Fortunately our Family can still outvote my closet.

I hope so, because if his closet comes out of the closet, then his clothes would be all over the bedroom and that would be a mess.

I suspect the separation of church and state in America would get in the way, at least compared to the India ruling.

And our current administration isn't exactly gonna be on board. But that makes this thread a political discussion, so....

That's an outright attack on the religion there. They just devolved a deity to a human.

its an interesting tactic. Is there something you want to protect? Assign human status to it with its attendant protections. Heck, here's a lawyer in New York right now arguing that an Ape should be granted "personhood" status/protection

On Thursday, Wise — who founded the Nonhuman Rights Project on behalf of the great apes, cetaceans and elephants — will go before the appellate division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Manhattan and argue that two of his clients, chimpanzees Kiko and Tommy, should be afforded the rights of "personhood."

and that's not all:

Argentina granted a captive orangutan basic human rights, starting from late 2014

I'm shocked no one has tried to posthumously bestow "person" status on our beloved Cincinnatian Harambe, so they can sue someone.

(okay, I'm sure someone has tried, I'm shocked it hasn't been big news)
