Re: Virginia Beach
It's been many years since I visited the area (I was maybe 10), but I remember it as a fun place for a family vacation. If you or any of your family are really into history, Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown are all reasonable drives. The first two are about an hour, the second more like an hour and forty five. Colonial Williamsburg is really fun for kids and Yorktown is a neat battlefield. Have fun!
BTW, you wouldn't think it but Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia by quite a bit.

When I was on active duty in the US Army we trained at Virginia Beach. My only ride on a beach landing craft. Glad it was a training exercise.
