Stay on land while you're out at Ocean City, eh?

That was EXACTLY what I was going to write (instead of what I did) but I didn't recall you ever mentioning recreational boating so it might have seemed weird.

I think I suffer from too much knowledge from my past. Weird things happen even within sight of land so unless I’m in a BIG ship, I’ll pass. We know local folks who routinely take their 26’ fishing boat 30+ miles out from Ocean City and have had near misses before. Plus, just tooling around the bay near Ocean City with friends I see too many folks with Cracker Jack box knowledge of Rules of the Road playing chicken with jet skiers. Better left to the drunks.

While on a small sailboat in a lake near Houston many years ago we were hit by a drunken jet skier and the boat was sunk. Had to swim to shore; fortunately it was only a few hundred yards. Ever since, I've been much more of a cautious boater (and I don't go anywhere near jet skis).

A few years ago a new ICD coding system was instituted for medical people identify different diseased better. Overnight we went from about 8000 codes to over 68,000 codes. There are tons of bizarre codes who appear to exist simply because they have occurred somewhere at some time

One of my favorite codes has been "submersion or drowning as a result of getting off of burning water skis." Your story explains to me where that code might have come....

To make you feel a little better, a brief story back from my submariner days, Pre-9/11. I can’t believe how cavalier we were transiting $1B nuclear submarines in and out of ports with nary an escort in those days—just a tugboat in case we lost steerage.

Anyway, one time we were coming up the Thames River in New London, CT and there was a nice sailboat in the channel who thought they would get a closer look at us despite repeated warnings on bridge to bridge radio, and finally by multiple 5 blasts on the ship’s whistle, the internationally recognized danger signal. The channel in the Thames for a submarine which draws 35’ under the keel is very narrow and defined so we really have no place to go without running aground. What happened next was predictable: 7000 ton, 360’ long HY-80 steel hulled submarine slows as slow as is possible without loss of steerage but the 40’ sailboat washes up on our bow, heels over, and starts to sink. We order the tug to cast off from us and render assistance and tell the Coast Guard and everyone on harbor common radio what has happened. Heck, it happened right under the nose of the Coast Guard Academy. We later learned that the sailboat sank with a broken keel and had to be dredged from the channel at the owner’s expense, plus charges were brought on the owner for interfering despite repeated warnings. That sailboat owner had a very bad day.

Nowadays that would never happen. Our submarines are escorted to and from port by armed gunboats to run interference and the submarine itself has multiple watchstanders topside and in the sail armed with long rifles, shotguns, and other kinetics.
