Here is the definition of a superfan. The man did not attend Tulane but his blood was green. Rest in peace, Wayne!

All...

As mentioned above, there is a Wayne Picou Memorial Fund being set up with all donations going to TAF...this is being done in leu of flowers. Wayne was passionate about all of the athletic programs at Tulane and this a great way for his passion to live on.

Please consider making a donation to TAF in Wayne's name. The family will be apprised of all the donations made to TAF in Wayne's name and you will receive a special thank you from TAF.

I can't think of a better way to honor Wayne and honor our student athletes

The closest I remember to Wayne getting tossed was at a basketball game where Tulane's mascot was a giant Wave. Wayne kept yelling "Down in front" at the mascot who could not kneel down becuase he was in this ridiculous Wave outfit. Wayne,as I remember started tapping the Wave to try and get it out of the way and finally a male Tulane cheerleader decided to defend the mascot's honor and threatened Wayne with bodily harm. Security was called, as I remember to mediate the Wayne/mascot conflict.

Yes, there was one basketball game I know of where Wayne was kicked out. Gary Bernard told me the story yesterday. Gary, since you now figured out how to post  why don't you tell the story?

I vaguely being threatened by the Frog. I also remember a pitcher named "Bubba" for Memphis state who wanted to get physical.

Here's a triva question: "What opposing pitcher had 'Feet of Clay'?

Do we send them directly to TAF, or is there a 3rd party collecting the contributions?

RIP Wayne...

I can't really find the words to say about this tragedy...so, I will say "thanks" to Wayne for his promotion of Tulane University and of the Green Wave's athletic teams. The John Curtis Christian School's condolences and prayers are with the Picou family throughout this difficult time.

I'm glad I/we were able to give Wayne a joyride during the 1997-98 football seasons.

I last talked to Wayne while attending a fall camp practice this year and it was nice "catching up" with him and re-hashing some old times.

May someone pick up Wayne's torch and run with it!

Moment of silence for Wayne Picou before tonight's game

I hope all that can make it a little before the game starts will. I think there will be one for Preston's father as well, but I am not sure about that.

Wayne in memoriam

Post by JD Tulane »

I first "noticed" Wayne at Fogelman, maybe 20 - 25 years ago. I heard this voice...over the din of a pretty full house. It took me just a second or two to lock on him because his voice was so distinctive and loud. He was really wailing on a ref who had just blown an obvious call. One of our guys had taken a charge but was called for a blocking foul. The ref must have thought that Wayne was on the court standing next to him. I thought Wayne was sitting next to me. That's how he was. He could be across the gymnasium but his presence was felt all over. It was palpable. The guy was born to cheer at Tulane games and to keep the refs in line. I never exchanged more than a "hello" with him and regret that now. I know he was a walking encycopedia of Tulane sports. He sure had spent enough time studying the sports page to be an expert. He probably was an expert on a lot of other things, too, but I just didn't take the time to find out. He will be missed but I suspect that refs everywhere will now have to stay on their toes because Wayne will be watching.

I first seen Wayne while attending Tulane in the late 70's early 80's, at a Tulane Baseball game. And yes, he did have his scorebook and at that time, was giving the umpires hell.

He will be missed.

My first memories as a kid of Wayne began in the mid to late '80s at Tulane baseball games. I would always remember this short stocky man with that wild curley hair standing at the top of the bleachers behind home plate going toward the 3rd base line. I would always remember him saying "let's get, 'em greenies" at the start of the baseball games, and I do remember a lot of his heckling of the umpires. As a kid Wayne made an impression on me, and I think I owe a lot of my loud cheers and emotions at Tulane games to him and of course, my dad.

I don't think I actually met Wayne in person until the party at Bruno's after the review in '03. I introduced myself and told him my name. We talked for a few mintues. Even though I talked for him for only a few minutes that first time, he always remembered my name whenever I saw him after that. I remembered seeing him a few times in the Dome this past football season. We exchanged pleasantries, and that was all.

I will always remember Wayne as the fan that made an impression on me as a kid. I respected his emotions and passion displayed at Tulane games. Tulane athletics lost a great fan and supporter, and his prescence at Tulane games will be missed. RIP, Wayne!

Proud to have Wayne in Houma...

Wayne took refuge here in Houma after Katrina. He rented an apartment for awhile. I am saddened by his passing, but know that he had to be quite uncomfortable in his final months of life.

May he R. I. P. He and his family are in my prayers.

I did not know Wayne

But from the posts in this thread I have come to realize that that fact provides a huge blank space in my life. My prayers go out to his family.

This is from Gary Bernard:

"Wayne and I were at a ladies basketball game and Wayne was riding one of the refs really bad---as we know he could. There was a time out, the music was playing and just as the music stopped Wayne yelled out "YOU STUPID SON OF A B----". The ref went to the scorers table and they called M.L.(Asst. AD) to the table. M.L. then came and told Wayne that the ref said he had to stop yelling or we would have to forfeit the game. Wayne was not happy but said OK. M.L. went back to the ref and talked. Next here comes M.L. with two security guards. The ref said Wayne had to go or the game was over and we would lose. Now Wayne is really mad---those veins were popping and words were flowing, but for the sake of Tulane he left and waited outside. You could hear him yelling the whole way out.
Every 5 or 10 minutes I would go and give him the score. If I remember correctly we won the game."

THE PICOU FUND

Post by Pelican Power »

Will the Wayne Picou Memorial Fund being established as a one-time fund for this year only or will it this fund be an established fund and created into an endowed fund to support Tulane Athletics overall? Does anyone know the family to appropriately ask?

Wayne was unique. He worked tirelessly to discover and then present information relating to Tulane athletics. He was a reliable source Tulane fans could turn to in order to learn the latest information on recruiting, coaching searches, new facilities, etc. He attended countless practices. Each year, prior to the football season, he would write detailed evaluations of the Tulane team, position by position, and of the newcomers to the team. He would follow those evaluations up with articles discussing each of Tulane's opponents. No other single source came close to presenting that range of information.

Years ago, Wayne became convinced that the day would come when Tulane would move to build its own stadium. He personally visited and evaluated several possible sites for a new stadium. Now that Tulane does indeed seem to be considering the construction of a stadium, Wayne looks like a prophet. He was, but his prophecies were based on hard work and careful investigation. He was one of a kind.

Just remembered another Wayne story. We were at a women's b-ball game in the late 90's, despite being ranked, there were still maybe 100 people there (it was an OOC game against a cr#p team). Well, it's late in the game and we're up 30+ or something and Mike Strom (that's his name right?) from the T-P was there covering the game. He had his laptop but he wasn't following the game at all or writing down anything while the game was going on. He was actually following a NASCAR race. Anyway, Wayne got really ticked off and started chanting "Strom's looking at porn, Strom's looking at Porn". Everyone in the arena heard it. Strom got up, didn't look at Wayne and just left. Coach Stockton was giving Wayne the evil eye from across the arena. Parents were covering their kids ears and I was rolling in the aisle about to wet my pants.

Yeah, men's basketball games are where I first saw who I would later find out was Wayne. I didn't miss any basketball games while in school and always saw the group sitting under the basket at the Law Road end of Fogleman. If the game was boring, Wayne never was so we'd watch Wayne to see what was coming next. Since we didn't know him, we would ask each other 'who are those guys?', to the point where we started to sound like Butch & Sundance during their flight from Lord Baltimore and lawman Joe Lefors.

Tulane should put a plaque on that seat as a remembrance.

1984, I think. The closest thing I ever recall to a brawl breaking out at a Tulane baseball game. One of Memphis State's players (it wasn't Bubba; he was pitching) plowed over Steve Riley at the plate and separated his shoulder (which probably cost Tulane an NCAA bid that season). After the game was when it got ugly between the fans.
