Campus Architecture
First, the library addition is horrid. It doesn't look like it belongs. Like a bad hat.
Now, the addition to the business school. The original building, though new, was updated traditional, with a wonderful classic entry and staircase leading up to the front door. But the skeleton on the addition looks like it will be ultra modern--again, nothing like the original building.
Who is making these godawful decisions about campus architecture?

Let's just blame Cowen.

I agree about the addition to Howard-Tilton. I haven't been inside. It might be nice, but this architect thinks that the exterior is awful. The colors of the existing and the addition aren't even complimentary. The only thing that the two have in common is the location of the columns, and that was obviously by necessity.
I disagree about the business school. I think the new construction is going to be very nice, and anything that hides the original building is an improvement. My understanding is that the new construction will be correcting some code issues in the original building. The same architect for the new addition did the conceptual design for the new terminal at the airport, by the way.

Why in the world are we hiring architects with degrees from the institution in Baton Rouge?

Re: Campus Architecture
Having not seen any photos of any of it but being familiar with what some (/many/most/all?) colleges are doing these days, I'm guessing LEED/sustainability has a large effect on the design.

Re: Campus Architecture
Agree about library, not about B school.
And yes Pete, right wrong or indifferent, Tulane supposedly has one of the most stringent, self-imposed LEED requirements of any school in the nation. I'm getting that from a friend/tailgate krewe member who is a TU alum, an architect, and has worked on projects recently on campus (neither of the two aforementioned ones)

Re: Campus Architecture
PS: FWIW, the inside of the library addition is very, very, very nicely done.

Re: Campus Architecture
I guess I just like traditional architecture. I love the front of the campus.

Re: Campus Architecture
FWIW, I prefer the front of campus too, though I'd be hesitant to use the word traditional. What's traditional? Whose tradition? Do we want to go back to mud huts? And the front of campus isn't really "traditional" by New Orleans standards (though it is certainly beautiful).
I get that you, in a general way, just mean you don't like contemporary designs. I tend to agree with you. But there are better and worse designs in ANY tradition. The outside of the top of the library is a worse one (though, in fairness, their options were probably limited by the existing building). I dont LOVE the outside of the new business school, but they were working on a really ugly building......and you can't suddenly put what you'd call a "traditional" look on the outside of it and have it gel, it just wouldn't work.
And one has to be careful of chasing an imitation of an imagined traditional too. Look at Duke. They built a 20th century campus and tried to make it look like Oxford, and instead it looks like a bad Disney rendetion of Hogwarts. The Oxford architecture (the real thing) is stunning, way better than anything 20th or 21st century, but the knockoffs in Durham ring absolutely hollow.
