Game on...NHL '17-'18

Post by Fan Since '54 »

I know I'm a little early but since I will be leaving for vacation on Monday (09/25), I though I'd start it now. Season begins Wednesday October 4th (12 days) with 4 games highlighted by the Banner Raising game in Pittsburgh when the Pens take on the St Louis Blues. I pretty much know from past NHL season threads who follows which teams, but if any newcomers wish to join in you're more than welcome. Can/Will the Pens 3-peat? I didn't think they could go back-to-back, but what did I know. So, in my mind, the can (anything is possible), but I'm definitely not sure if that will happen. Too many variables to take into consideration, injuries probably the most important variable. Other teams which could turn the trick are Nashville (natch), Columbus, Edmonton, Chicago, NY Rangers, Montreal (can't count out any team with Carey Price in net), or will it be another team that catches fire at the right time?

Your thoughts...

What is this? The "If at first you don't succeed, try try again" thread? You said the exact same thing last year. Yet the Hawks failed to win even one game in the playoffs. You might want to change your pick. Jeez, I hope didn't back up those words with a wager this past April.

Now if I had said that about the Pens the past two years and I had made a wager on it, I would be looking at being in a much higher tax bracket for the 2nd year in a row.

I'm down. Haven't played in a couple of years, but wouldn't mind playing again.

This sounds like an idea to me. Have never played in a hockey fantasy league.

A lot of folks were predicting the Lightning in the finals in '16-'17, but losing Stamkos for such a long time took the charge out of the Bolts.

it's not hard.. you have a bunch of players that you put in your lineup each day at certain positions... you accumulate goals, assists, powerplay goals, short handed goals, plus minus and penalty minutes... for goalies it's wins, save pct, shutouts and goals against average (ten categories)

you play another owner, head to head... and you score based on which of the two leads in each of those categories over a week's time.. so you can go anywhere from 10 - 0 in a given week to 0-10 and anything in between, including ties.

JMac, do you want to create a league? I'm betting we can get 8-10 at least casual players from here to join.

I have a couple of guys in my hockey league that are up for it... I think 8 would keep the talent strong and interesting

only thing we'd need to iron out is whether we go with "team" goalies or individual... "team" goalies make it easier on an owner, not having to check the status of guys who may be getting the night off and since this will be a league with more casual guys than gung-ho owners, I think that's the best play

Yahoo has a decent site for hockey and I think an autodraft is also best when you are looking at players scattered across the country.

Agree on all points. I've only played individual goalies in the past, but am fine with the team option. Yahoo is where I've played fantasy hockey before so I'm comfortable with that format. Autodraft makes a ton of sense. Count me in.

Pens raise the '16-'17 Stanley Cup Championship banner tonight. 1st back-to-back in 19 years. But there are still questions still to be addressed over the 3rd & 4th line center positions as the new season begins. Either the answers will start to be answered tonight or there will be continuing questions.

Outlaw, I'm sure you watched the Preds game last night, but you got screwed on Rask's GAA and save pct with those PPGs late in the game... if I win those categories this week, you can point to that as why!

That was less than ideal, but it's early yet and you do have to take the good with the bad. I'm hoping that bad luck will even out over time.
