College Football 2017 - Week 7

Post by Fan Since '54 »

Okay, just got back from vacation yesterday. Now it is week 7 of the College football season. the cream is starting to rise to the top. And some of that cream is is somewhat unexpected, or at least the "usual" cream...except for Alabama. The unexpected being mostly TCU in the Big 12.

And who do you like to turn the improbable into the probable this week. My not so probable from last week was Tulane playing in a game where 62 points were scored by one team...and winning. Also, what's up with Washington St, the used to be punching bag of the PAC-12, leading that conference. Uh, go Mike Leach.

So who might be your choice to "shock the world" this week.

You sound like Prof. Are you really ok with that?

I graduated from the Tulane University of Louisiana, which before it gained sponsorship from Paul Tulane was the University of Louisiana, and thus it remains so. I am roundly insulted that an upstart directional school would try to usurp the name in an attempt to sound as if they really belong. I'm insulted that ESPN could be duped into thinking that they are covering my Alma Mater.

ULL is the largest University with the most fields of study in the Louisiana system, second largest in state behind LSU. Its endowment(180m) is twice that of La Tech(90m), five times that of SLU(35M), three times that of UNO(60m). More directly compared to ULM which it has twice the number of students(17,000 to 8500) and NINE TIMES THE ENDOWMENT (180m to 20m). It is 120 years old, which is about the same as Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma state, and other flagship schools in the region. By those measures it is clearly the top(flagship) school in the University of Louisiana System and should properly have the name of the University of Louisiana.

If Prof. agrees with what I said then yes, he is right. I am perfectly fine with agreeing with him on many things.

If everyone called them the University of Louisiana it would benefit them as much as that sort of name has benefited the University of Ohio. Personally, I'm glad that the U of L thing has gained a little bit of traction. Why? Because those people (ULL fans) are every bit as miserable now as they were when they were laboring under the perfectly good handle of USL.

to get back on message...

No. 6 TCU at Kansas State | 12 p.m. | FS1

TCU is off to a great start but this is usually when the hot, surprising team from the Big 12 drops one.

South Carolina at Tennessee | 12 p.m. | ESPN

This is one of Butch Jones' last chances to stop the momentum running him out of town.

Purdue at No. 7 Wisconsin | 3:30 p.m. | BTN

This is a sneaky great game. It should be on a bigger platform than the BTN.

No. 10 Auburn at LSU | 3:30 p.m. | CBS

The home field always matters in this one. If you want Ed Orgeron to get time enough to really do a job on LSU football, root for him.

No. 25 Navy at Memphis | 3:45 p.m. | ESPNU

I'd be stunned if this is not one of the two or three best games of the weekend.

Middle Tennessee at UAB | 6:30 p.m.

Bill Clark is a very underrated head coach. This should be a letdown spot for them but if it's not then Clark is a very, very underrated coach.

Texas A&M at Florida | 7 p.m. | ESPN2

As bad as Kevin Sumlin looked at the start of the year, he's doing much better. If A&M still wants him out he should be able to get another P5 gig easily.

UCLA at Arizona | 9 p.m. | PAC12

...like the loser of this one. I think RR wins this big. Mora Jr is on his way back to the booth, probably after next year, though.

Boise State at No. 19 San Diego State | 10:30 p.m. | CBSSN

SDState is running out of chances to lose. The AAC needs to get to that top G5 bowl slot most years. We need them to lose. But this ain't your older brother's Boise.

Oregon at No. 23 Stanford | 11 p.m.

The loser of this one will have 3 losses at the midpoint of the season.

Ohio University. The little(18,000) upstart(founded in 1804) in Athens, Ohio where Frank Solich still coaches.

Just tuned in the ULL - TX State game. It is weird to hear the announcers say 'Louisiana' when talking about ULL. Looking at the endzones, there is no extra space except for the spelled-out LOUISIANA. Their helmets say Louisiana, the field, the announcers - it's almost comical. If you've got to scream it no one really listens. Be cool if Monroe would call themselves Louisiana as well. Louisiana College still exist in Alexandria?

You do know that they decided to be called Louisiana, and the rest of the country outside of Tulanians doesn't care and just goes, "okay, they're Louisiana". They're not trying too hard, it's just what they believe and no one else cares except a few Tulanians here.
