Coaching Carousel 2017-18

Post by tulaneoutlaw »

I thought one of these had been started already, but I think it turned into the Hugh Freeze thread. Please move if I'm wrong.

In addition to that move at Ole Miss, UTEP has fired Kugler and brought back Mike Price to finish out the season.

Then today, Oregon St. and Gary Andersen parted ways. Andersen had a good run at Utah St including an 11 win season and then spent two seasons at Wisconsin. Despite winning nine and ten games in two seasons there, he left Wisconsin and headed to Oregon St where he never got off the ground. What's interesting about this is the parting seems to be mutual. Andersen is leaving money on the table.

Oregon State should look at two Pac 12 assistants. Or St alum Jonathan Smith (at Washington) or Cal OC Beau Baldwin.

Here's a story you should see more than once as the season starts to wind down:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/st ... es-reports

Sumlin has done a good job re-booting his team this year. I understand the bloom if off his rose and A&M thinks he's eminently replaceable but if he is let go Ole Miss should DIVE on him. They couldn't possibly do any better.

Is Petrino going back to Fayetteville (unlikely if Long stays, but he's on the hot seat).

Miles in Oxford? Why not.

If Riley done in Lincoln, who tries to revive that program with the burden of the Big 10?

Assuming Butch Jones is done, who's the next rising star (after Kiffin, Dooley, and Jones) to try to resurrect Rocky Top?

Is Mullen finally going to have enough being limited in Cow Bell?

Does Franlin bolt Happy Valley for a return to the SEC assuming they continue to be a contender?

Did Dino Babers punch himself a ticket to a bigger gig last night?

Any college coaches jumping to the Colts? Bears? Jets (assuming they don't continue their suprise)?

I suspect that article posted elsewhere about hot young AAC coaches will prove true, and several of those jobs you mention, doncecco, will be filled by guys from our very own conference.

The important thing about AAC coaches is they aren't leaving for mediocre P5 schools(Taggert to Oregon, Herman to Texas, Feunte to Virginia Tech. The worst was Ruhle to Baylor and that wasn't bad).

-Mike Norvell to Oregon State or Missouri, maybe. Very well may stick around another year and see if a Texas job opens up I don't think he'll get looks that are any better than also-ran type P5 programs.

-Scott Frost to Nebraska, Tennessee, AZ State or maybe Arkansas, UCLA, or A&M opens up.

-Niumatalolo won't pass on BYU forever. Any random year now for that to happen.

-Chad Morris will get looks from some P5 Schools. Missouri may be a decent fit. He will likely stay around Texas.

Neal Brown at Troy will likely end up at a lower P5 or AAC school. The same goes for other Sunbelt or CUSA coaches.

What makes it interesting will be the surprise vacancies. What happens if Fedora bolts from UNC, Snyder retires, Campbell leaves Iowa State, Patterson leaves TCU, Mullen leaves Moo U, or Auburn collapses and fires Malzahn. Something like one of those things is bound to happen.

Good thoughts Poseidon. I do think Neal Brown makes another stop before a P5 scoops him up. Some lower level P5s might offer, but he may prefer to wait and improve his stock elsewhere first.

While the AAC does stand to lose some solid coaches, keep in mind that Norvell and Frost have both in place less than 2 years. Neither is a truly proven commodity even if they both end up at P5s next year. There are also some good coordinators at P5s who will wind up with some of the jobs you mention. Venables from Clemson would have his pick at this point.

I'd bet Troy's coach ends up in our conference next year, replacing one of those other guys who will get a big P5 gig.

Frost is a cut above for two reasons. He's not just winning, but winning a lot from what was an 0-12 team. He may very well take them from 0-12 to 12-0 in two years. Secondly, he was successful as an OC at Major P5 school. So three good years as Major OC plus two as HC is a proven commodity to a lot of major schools. You are correct about Norvell though.

Miles in Oxford? Why not?

Ole Miss doesn't yet know its immediate future vis a vis further sanctions. If they get hammered (and the other big leagues should be demanding that) a three year tenure for an older caretaker like Miles makes sense for them. If they skate they won't do this and will "go young."

If Riley done in Lincoln, who tries to revive that program with the burden of the Big 10?

Riley is done but the Nebraska we grew up with probably can't happen anymore. Scott Frost needs to be smarter than just going back to his home state because Go Big Red.

Assuming Butch Jones is done, who's the next rising star (after Kiffin, Dooley, and Jones) to try to resurrect Rocky Top?

This is another "not as good a job as everyone thinks" job. I'd go there before Nebraska, though, so maybe Frost is the guy here. If not, why not Scott Satterfield who nearly beat Jones' best team in Neyland?

Is Mullen finally going to have enough being limited in Cow Bell?

The boost from the LSU game has worn off. With Ole Miss down and staying down I think he stays until his next really good year, probably with that QB from Landry-Walker. Mullen is still fairly young.

Does Franklin bolt Happy Valley for a return to the SEC assuming they continue to be a contender?

Why, for God's sake?

Did Dino Babers punch himself a ticket to a bigger gig last night?

No. Babers did get a lot closer to a getting a nice second contract from Syracuse. He's older than you think. That second deal will carry him into his sixties.

Because Northern teams (other than maybe OSU with Meyer) will always be limited compared to SEC/ACC/Big12/USC. Is Penn St really still a marquee program, with or without Sandusky stains? And you've got to believe there are parents who still might tell their kid "Penn St - no way, can't have you go there."

Came from Vandy, Knoxville might be calling....

Franklin comes from Pennsylvania. He also makes a pile of cash, enough that everyone but Texas and the NFL will not even consider approaching him.

There was a lot to think about here, so thank you.

One of the things that has jumped out at me is the number of hot seat guys who have cooled their seats this year. Rich Rodriguez has probably earned himself another year, Dave Doeren has certainly done that, and if Kevin Sumlin does leave A&M he'll get another P5 gig the same offseason. Some of the P5 coaches thought to be possible movers or hot prospects haven't had great seasons. That includes Larry Fedora, Pat Narduzzi, Mike MacIntyre, etc. Some hot prospects among G5 coaches have cooled off like Phillip Montgomery and Frank Wilson (losses to USM and North Texas).

Then there are some schools doing so bad that they might be afraid of the response to their getting into the coaching market. Kansas and Missouri come to mind.

The thing with Frost is that while bringing back Nebraska might be very difficult, I say he goes 'back home' like so many guys who feel that STATE loyalty. (my opinion only).

Frost was born in Nebraska but I'd like to add that he signed with Stanford out of high school, then did a Troy Aikman in reverse, going to the Midwest and running the option instead of throwing it all over the lot in LA. If A&M and Tennessee open up he should go there instead of Nebraska. Just IMO.

Maybe outside of Pennsylvania but inside Pennsyltucky, nothing short of human sacrifice would deter most families set on becoming a Nittany Lion.

Cash money. He has a better chance to be in the playoffs every year at PSU than anywhere in the SEC and the Big 10 fans aren't delusional calling for the coach to be fired weekly

Ok, but that doesn't really address his point of Northern teams being limited talent-wise.
