Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
I dont usually chime in on recruiting but if signing a placekicker isn’t at the top of the remaining spots, I’d ask why. The whole complexion of our offense has changed because we cannot count on any FG attempt outside of XP range. It would be nice to have another Cairo or Seth or Eddie but I’d settle for plain competency in a 40 yd. FG kicker.

I'll take a couple of DB's and a LB.

tjtla, thanks for going to the trouble of making the list.
To all, not exactly a rhetorical question: If Scott truly only has some MAC and CUSA offers other than Tulane's, should we be disappointed that Tulane is recruiting an apparent two star player with "mediocre" offer comps?

If Air Force and Navy are recruiting him, he most likely fits the option style QB that WF would like to have.Baywave1 wrote:tjtla, thanks for going to the trouble of making the list.

Scott is not a triple option QB. He's a short, mobile spread guy. If we sign him, somebody is leaving or moving positions or both.

Obviously having a walk-on handling PK duties is not ideal and I agree we need to keep looking, but, I often wonder how much of not kicking was due to the inexperience or simply based on the analytics that Fritz uses.TUPF wrote:I dont usually chime in on recruiting but if signing a placekicker isn’t at the top of the remaining spots, I’d ask why. Speaking of the analytics, I noticed during the game we were getting ready to run a 3rd down play and I saw Fritz talking to the guy that holds the binder. Looked like he mouthed "see what it says for 4th down". Fritz has said he uses it for every 4th down situation and that was the first time I've noticed him asking about it.

Can't say no to improving the roster but I'm a little nervous when I think about what having a good PK would do to Fritz' conservative bent.

we need a competent, Div.1A quality PK in the worst way.

I agree #1 need for next year is PK but a close #2 is a pass rusher who can bring it every down. Two would not hurt.

I'm ok with not having a kicker assuming the rest of our strategy embraces that

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
To answer one of my questions above provided my math is correct, we currently have 79 players on scholarship and 11 seniors on the roster. That leaves 16 openings. With normal attrition, I would think 21 to 23 would be the final number. At most, we probably have seven open spots. I think we will take 1 QB, 2 DL, 1 LB, 1 PK, and 2 DB’s.

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
After a couple of missed extra point kicks early on, our kicking has been at least average. We had a couple tipped kicks (notably against Cincy), but I don't understand why some seem to think the coaches have a total distrust in the kicking game at this point. Not kicking the FG at the end of the SMU game was not because of a lack of confidence in the kicker--it was because Fritz was playing for the WIN, rather than the tie. Overtime favors the home team. The conventional wisdom is to go for the tie at home and go for the win on the road.
But so many fans, perhaps spoiled by the string of excellent kickers we had, seem to think that we have absolutely no kicker at all. To me, a replacement kicker need not be a high priority.

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
We missed 5 XP's this year. Glover was responsible for two. He was 8 for 9 on FG's with a long of 37. Kickers get better like a lot other positions. If he can add range out to the 25 yard line we might be okay. As for Neenan, I'd try him out on kickoffs and punts. If he shows something he can replace Block after next year.

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
Kicking cost Tulane at least one game this year, arguably two. We have no way of knowing how many times we went for it or punted when, if we would have had a reliable PK ala Santos, we would have tried a FG. Five missed XPs in a season is a LOT.Roller wrote:After a couple of missed extra point kicks early on, our kicking has been at least average. So, if we have a "B+" or better placekicker, we go to a bowl. That's enough for me to say that we need a better PK.

Watching pre-game and the game on Saturday, Glover appears to have a pretty good leg and was getting good height on the ball. I am no expert, but he seems comfortable and looks like he is improving.

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
Glover's biggest issue is hitting the ball with any kind of consistency. He's got enough leg. But one kick might not get 20 feet off the ground and the next kick he might over-rotate his hips. He needs to find a little more consistency. We are recruiting both kickers and punters, so for anyone who is worried about that, it's definitely an area we're going to try to improve.
As for attrition, there will undoubtedly be some. I'm sure some of the RS Jrs will leave and others will leave due to issues with playing time or injuries. We have one who may not be back because of disciplinary issues. I'd say 20-22 is a good estimate for this class.
As for Scott, we'll see. I think we're "ok" either way. Personally, I think it's time for us to pick a lane on offense. I liked the run/pass mix a lot more at the end of the season. We have to be able to throw the ball and create closer to a 60/40 balance on offense rather than 80/20 or 70/30. Throwing accuracy and arm talent need to be more valued in our recruiting efforts. In that respect, Scott is great. However, he's much more of a pocket passer than people realize. He's not a running QB. He can get you first downs with his legs, but he's much closer to Glen C. running ability wise than to Brantley (just my opinion). In his JUCO highlights, his legs are so big he almost looks labored when he runs. So, if you are going to play Scott, Fritz's offense is going to look a lot more like the offense at SHSU with Brian Bell at QB, which is fine by me. One thing he did at SHSU to incorporate more of the read/option was to play a receiver at QB in a wildcat type look. We could see that but with Brantley at QB to give more of a different look. I'd be okay with a mobile QB who didn't run as many pre-determined runs.

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
personally, I like the offense we ran toward the end of the year which will mean a QB who is comfortable running as well as passing. I saw the pure pocket QB under CJ and the run first and second version earlier this year and last under WF and both were TERRIBLE. We labored to score points. Which is why QB recruit Christian Daniels interests me so much, he seems to have the right combination of skills.
Maybe Scott isn't the answer that we're looking for..............

If we get Scott, I would presume one of the backup QB’s would transfer. Have you heard anything regarding this situation?
I read we are visiting some athletes in the Cinco Ranch area this week (my neck of the woods). Those kids can play. Do you know our chances?
Will we sign more DT’s? Any names to follow?
Will we sign any JUCO’s other than Scott?
Would you expect the staff to sign the full allotment early, or hold some for the late period?
Is there any big name recruit we have a realistic shot in December?
Thanks, and I hope everything is going well.
Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
1) I haven't heard anything regarding other QBs transferring. If I had to guess, we're going to bring in Daniels and Scott will go elsewhere, so we'll be good.tjtlja wrote:

2) No clue what our chances are with the twins from Cinco Ranch. I like the DLineman a lot more than the brother. The "athlete" is probably best suited to redshirt and play a TE/H-Back position if you ask me.
3) I think it's possible that we sign another DT. I know we haven't given up on trying to sign Lichon Terrell who is a current WKU commit. Devin Winters from McDonogh 35 is an interesting prospect. He's been to some games and has some big offers (Ole Miss, Houston, Cincy, Kansas) but his recruitment has been very very quiet. I don't know if he's got academic issues or if he's just really tight lipped. He could be a good pickup and is much bigger now than his listed size on recruitment websites (245). He's much closer to the 275 range.
4) We're in on a JUCO defensive back named Vonte Davis as well as a linebacker from EMCC who went to Georgia Tech to start his career. I'm not sure at this point if we're going to bring in any other JUCOs, but JUCO recruiting will heat up very very quickly in the next 2 weeks once grades are posted.
5) I think we'll sign close to our full allotment in December. The competition after December is going to be fierce with schools trying to grab that extra prospect or two.
6) I really don't know about anyone "big" that we would be in on that might come to TU right now. These are players who I would like Tulane to keep recruiting and who could be in play based on coaching changes and the player's willingness to keep their recruitment open despite committing to another school: Lance Robinson (Kansas St. commit), Josh Smith (Kansas commit), Devin Brumfield (Texas Tech commit), Jeremy Gibson (Arkansas commit), Tahj Magee (Louisiana Tech commit), Tahj Brown (Houston commit).

Re: 2018 Football Recruiting Class
What has Winters been doing this year? He was a 2017 prospect who did not sign and was said by some to be reclassifying backwards, which I've never seen done. But he has no hudl from this year and does not appear on Mac 35's roster to my scant knowledge.
