New Redshirt Rule

Unread post by TU23 »

The NCAA just passed a new rule allowing players to play in up to 4 football games a year and still redshirt without needing medical justification. This is big. Teams will now be able to play someone they would otherwise redshirt to cover for an injury for a couple of weeks etc.

So, pro and con. Discuss from both the perspective of Tulane, and that of a football factory.

Does this matter what 4 games?

Can you plan someone getting experience around "cupcake games." For example, Alabama plays typical SEC schedule then plays, UAB, Nicholls, Troy and Appalachian State. They plan on giving a player who is going to redshirt a change to play in these 4 games? Can you now designate young players to play in those games?

NCAA passes significant transfer reforms, redshirt rule
https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.c ... hirt-rule/

So it's not retroactive to players who may have only played a couple games last year or whatever. It is ANY 4 games during the year, so wavery's hypothetical is doable. The NCAA also passed a rule making it much easier for schools to contact players who wish to transfer and removed the ability of the school the player is transferring from to block schools (it would seem). Two wins for the athletes here. Not so good for the smaller schools probably.

I haven't read the final rule, but in the proposal stage it didn't matter which 4 games.

Per the story linked above, it goes into effect on October 15. That's odd, being mid-season. Of course, it also means Ohio State won't try playing a bunch of planned redshirts against us.

I agree with Wavery above, I can see the P5 power teams only playing their starters a little bit during the early games against "cupcakes". Just enough to shake off the rust and get them comfortable but while reducing the risk of injury.

In a weird way the NCAA has created a sort of preseason within the season.

The biggest plus in my opinion will be players who, in the past, would have to "burn their redshirt" because of injuries etc don't have to do so. This is a great rule just for that reason alone. It also allows those who play in the first couple of games and 'just aren't ready' to shut it down and not lose a year or others to play in the place of suspended players etc.

I hadn’t thought of that and you are right. You can see scheduling a few years out from now for the football factories where it’s a front-loaded four game “preseason” where teams operate the NFL: the first team in for a quarter and the rest of the game filled out with second and third teamers. Just like the NFL, by the fourth game the starting skill players may be clipboard holders.

Then we will end up with more and more FCS upsets. As long as the games count "preseason" won't happen. Also the big shcools aren't going to stop the beginning of the year showcase games anytime soon. On top of that it's not like there will be more plays in a game or more games. Playing time will be split even more. Red-shirt fresh and sophs will no longer have an advantage over slightly players better than them that are typically saved to red-shirt.

I disagree to a point... as far as the transfer rule. You can lure players who were highly recruited but are down the depth chart... an example would be Jalen Hurts... with no blocking possible and contact being allowed, Willie Taggart at South Florida could pick up the phone and say "hey Jalen, you could finish your last two seasons as our starter seeing as you aren't leap frogging over Tagovailoa"

Where this will really help is a situation like this....you have a clear leader Senior QB and a true freshman who you think is better than the backup but you'd prefer to redshirt him...Senior QB gets hurt and has to miss 2 games. Instead of playing the backup to preserve the true freshman's redshirt, true freshman will play and still be able to redshirt.

You can also let your freshmen sit out most of the season, allow them to learn and build their bodies and then unleash them for the last 4 games. A lot of kids don't come to campus ready to play but are ready to play late in year 1 after they've digested the playbook and spent a good 5-6 months in the weight room (counting Summer). Lots of specialty package possibilities for late in the season...could breakout things other teams haven't seen on film because of new personnel. Some coaches will be hesitant to make changes but teams who are either out of it or who know they will go to a bowl but maybe not win the conference can get their freshmen game ready for their RS Freshmen year by playing them 50 plays in the last 4 games. This rule could've saved a year of Darius Bradwell.

According to what I have been told, re; transfer rules:

Each conference is now free to make up their own rules, in regards to transfer. So, look to see what each conference decides to do, and how that will affect recruiting in those conferences. My best guess, is that most conferences will just create a rule that says you can’t transfer to a rival conference school.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens the next few months.
