How do you think a modern attack boat would fare against a squid that size?TUPF wrote:Looks like a Jules Verne sea monster. Headed my way.

You’re “very wary” of every one. ;)

Isaac is the one New Orleans needs to keep an eye on. Not next weekend but into the following week.

I had a colleague who used to book late summer/early fall vacations on Cape Hatteras and you’d think after evacuating on the second or third day of his stay every couple of years or so that he’d find another vacation spot.

I have a friend who is an engineer at Eastman; he is planning a trip to Hilton Head next weekend for his wife's birthday. No plans as of this afternoon of changing or cancelling. My trip to Charleston isn't until Halloween; by then the threat of hurricanes will (hopefully) be over.
My gut feeling is that it will hit Wilmington or Myrtle Beach; while the former seemed nice on my one visit there, the latter is not my cup of tea (I have too many teeth still in my mouth to fit in with the folks there...)

TUPF, you're gonna be on her starboard forequarter, where she's strongest. Stay safe.

Wilmington NC is going to get hammered.. Charlotte will get a tropical storm for sure... my wife is already in panic mode... we have 24 gallons of water (we are on a well and if we lose power, we have no water).. I am heading out to get more propane because our cook top is electric. I am hoping being overprepared will save us!

Scrub your bathtub, and fill it up before the storm hits.Johnny Mac wrote:Wilmington NC is going to get hammered.. You're pretty far inland, though, so it's doubtful you'll get more that TS winds, if that. My wife is in Winston with her mother, and people there are getting nervous, too. But I think y'all are good, that far inland (I mean, like, how worried do Shreveport and Jackson ever get?).

The bathtub thing is a good idea even if just to flush toiletsRoller wrote:Scrub your bathtub, and fill it up before the storm hits.Johnny Mac wrote:Wilmington NC is going to get hammered.. Re: Hurricane stuff -
I think the last few years have taught us that although the hurricane force wind scale gets the headlines, it’s the accompanying rains that do the extended damage. There is some correlation between the two but not always. My daughter was in Brattleboro, VT for some music thing a couple of years ago and the remnants of some hurricane whose name I cannot remember absolutely kicked the region’s butt. Whole parts of the state were cutoff due to washed out roads; trickling mountain streams became ten feet deep and washed giant boulders down mountains and destroyed roads. The town of Brattleboro had parts under water and they just don’t have the experience New Orleans has.
Houston’s problems last year showed it’s the torrential rains that are the problems. Cities don’t drain. Too much concrete and asphalt. And no matter where you live 20” of rain is going to cause devastation.

Yup, the hurricane prone spots get "thinned" regularly (only the strong trees, buildings, roofs, signs, etc. survive). Places further inland get heavy rain and strong wind and it wreaks havoc. A little under a decade ago, Cincinnati got remnants of a hurricane and the 60 mph winds took down so many power lines that places were without power up to 2 weeks.

I'm still paying off an SBA loan for damages caused to my house from the last Hurricane Isaac. Did we have to have another one?

Noon Monday and Florence is a Cat 4. Cone of uncertainty being refined to somewhere near Wilmington, NC which means all the NC Coast might take the right front quadrant brunt. Kiss your Cape Hatteras vacation house goodbye.
