ah, i misread and didn't see "private" thought you were making the point that the west coast is way down in football recruiting, which is largely true - i was pointing out oregon had a very good class but not applicable since you mean private schools.

Northwestern recruits all over the country, i think any school that is serious about maintaining any semblance of academic integrity is almost forced to. the two kids we plucked from Chicago this year come from two of the best academic schools in the area. i don't know what kind of connections WF has out in CA though
