State of Basketball
I understand that they lost Frazier and Reynolds, but through the first few games, this team looked like it would be competitive as it had been under Dunleavy. Play teams tough, scratch out a few upsets while losing some games they should have won, etc. I don't think anyone could have expected losing by 20 to Sun Belt teams, losing to winless SWAC schools, and seemingly on pace to being totally noncompetitive in conference.
I have heard that Ona Embo has been cleared was cleared to play a month ago but has yet to practice. Paul getting ejected yesterday also raises an eyebrow.
Does anyone have any insight as to whether there is some internal problem within the basketball program? Again, this is just so stunning that I assume something must be wrong.

Don't need special insight to recognize a flaming dumpster fire, but yes, the Ona Embo thing smells funny. Does he retain a year of post-transfer eligibility if he never sees the court this season?EagerBiever wrote:I understand that they lost Frazier and Reynolds, but through the first few games, this team looked like it would be competitive as it had been under Dunleavy. He would be able to count it as a redshirt year, yes. He would still need to sit out a year unless he graduates this year.angrywavedad wrote:Don't need special insight to recognize a flaming dumpster fire, but yes, the Ona Embo thing smells funny. Wandering around somewhere in a matchup zone
Re: State of Basketball
There was word at the end of last season that Ona Embo was considering turning pro. He decided not to at that time....
Re: State of Basketball
It's not true as to Ona Embo having been cleared. If he had wanted to transfer after deciding not to turn pro he would have transferred then so that he could play next year instead of sitting out two seasons.

Re: State of Basketball
I have totally soured on this team and its head coach. I was fully in support of him, but the fact the team cratered after the two best players (brought in by his predecessor) left, shows that CMD isn't able to truly recruit to the levels needed to compete in the AAC. Shakwon Barrett and Caleb Daniels are nice, serviceable players. Caleb is clearly trying to do too much for this team, as evident by his nearly 3 turnovers per game average. Neither are top of the line AAC talent and would be great bench players on a good team. Sehic has turned out nicely, but Cornish isn't nearly as good as we were led to believe when he transferred in. The Sudanese big men are clearly not good and are not going to get good in a reasonable amount of time. The three recruits this year have shown flashes of talent, but don't fit into the coaching style Dunleavy is committed to. We have one really good looking recruit signed and a horrible JC talent who was obviously promised a spot if he opened up his scholarship two summers ago. Not sure why any Division 1 team would go after a guy who's averaging less than 2 points per game in JC.
I've checked out on basketball. Any win from now until March will be a surprise to me.

I have no idea, but we've seen freefalls, where the team mentally checked-out, before.EagerBiever wrote:

The recruiting, although below his grandiose expectations, has been on par with 1/3-1/2 of the league.

And on par with many, many programs around the company who are able to get in the Top 100 regularly. For the foreseeable future, Tulane will get a mix of 2 and 3 star recruits - the problem is that MD's coaching philosophy relies on much higher level of players than he has been able to recruit and that he shows no interest in offensive sets or defensive principles that would make the most of the level of player that has shown up at Tulane. And whatever he is teaching, the kids don't seem to be learning. I can't count the number of times I see players getting in each other's way on offense or making the wrong switches on defense.GSx wrote:I have no idea, but we've seen freefalls, where the team mentally checked-out, before.EagerBiever wrote:

I would guess it's way more likely he just goes pro, whether it's the G-League or overseas. Don't forget that he went to the combine and kept his name in the draft almost until the very end last season.angrywavedad wrote:Don't need special insight to recognize a flaming dumpster fire, but yes, the Ona Embo thing smells funny. I doubt he plays another game for Tulane.
