Bonnett Carre to open -
Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
I thought to myself, the spillway seems to be opening more regularly as of late. Well, 8 times in first 66 years, now 5th time in last 11 years.

Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
The article doesn't mention it but typically in past spillway openings, hunting that is in season has been restricted nearby so that our local Nimrod's and Gastogne's can't station themselves on the water's edge and take potshots at the animals being driven by the river water in the spillway like beaters moving game toward hunters stationed at the end of the field for easy pickings. The authorities simply keep the sporting aspect in our paradise here. I understand both sides as who doesn't like an easier life.
Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
Otherwise if you can, go up river to see the opening. It's a spectacular example of the good work done by the Corps of E. and an example that even in the 21st century, a wooden dam in effect still works as a barrier control for flooding in the right setting. As noted above, it's a jaw dropping amount of water rushing by.

Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
all that flooding in the midwest is going to make its way down the Mississippi... they may need to build another spillway!!

They would open the Morganza Spillway if the river got too high. They opened that one about 5 years or so ago.Johnny Mac wrote:all that flooding in the midwest is going to make its way down the Mississippi... they may need to build another spillway!!

Looks like they will reopen the Spillway on Tuesday - twice in the same year. A first.

Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
This year is as bad as 1993, and that is saying something. St. Louis is bracing their flood walls and barely missed a big problem in '93, although downstate Illinois was devastated and had to blow levees. Once the river gets below Cairo and becomes the Mighty Mississippi when the Ohio flows into it, things are relieved somewhat. But that is what Bonnett Carre is for. Hopefully, it will not get much worse.
Plan your work, work your plan.
Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
A coworker lives in the Thibodaux/Napoleonville area and they are already being inundated by water flowing from the Atchafalaya basin which is at flood stage. Some houses near the basin are already taking in water. If the Morganza is opened, they are expecting 10 more feet of water in the Basin which would flow to Lake Verret which won’t be able to hold all of that water within the levee walls.

I don't know how the meteorologists in New Orleans feel, but the weather guy in Charlotte said there is concern over this tropical system and if it heads towards New Orleans.. the surge in the river combined with its high level could cause a lot of problems.

Re: Bonnett Carre to open -
last night there were several tracks on the spaghetti models that had it turning north much much sooner than the lines in that model you posted... so that's good for LA... bad for Texas.. although, if and when it curves back east, that heavy rain will end up in the Mississippi.

Yeah, the NOAA/Weather Channel has it coming up through the west central LA coast.Johnny Mac wrote:last night there were several tracks on the spaghetti models that had it turning north much much sooner than the lines in that model you posted... so that's good for LA... bad for Texas.. although, if and when it curves back east, that heavy rain will end up in the Mississippi.
