So, on to next topic, MLB Draft starts Monday

Post by noladave »

We know we are going to lose Kody.

I would suggest that Mathews will be drafted, and will most likely sign.

Another half a dozen guys, with at least 1 year of eligibility, could go, if drafted.

Any guesses, as to where guys will be drafted?

Of course Kody. Matthews will be drafted and will definitely leave. I think Roper, Solesky, and Gillies all have a shot. I don’t think anyone else, but it only takes one scout to like you. And given Kody’s status, there were plenty scouts that saw all these kids play.

And any one drafted will leave. They want out as bad as Jewett.

Outside of Hoese, I don’t know that I expect any of them to be drafted.
Mathews can hit, but his defense is a big question mark. I wouldn’t be shocked if Solesky or Cellucci were drafted.
I think Roper will be taken. It’s always a crap shoot with the recruits. Not always about how good they are, but how much money they want.

In Roper’s case, money will not be an issue. He has zero leverage. And scouts will also take you based on projection. Gillies has a shot because of his size and his work ethic.

Don't they wait 'till they're in school before any official announcement - or something like that. Maybe past the draft.

(Before this post was noladave's since deleted post saying we won't know who's going pro till 8-15).

I think that is old information. I thought a few years ago they moved up the date that players had to sign by. I'm sure there are some here who are up to date on that.

July 6th:

Competitive balance picks can be traded up until a few hours before draft begins, but teams not permitted to deal any other picks in draft. SIGNING DEADLINE: Teams must sign drafted players, other than those who were college seniors, by July 6.

I saw that for last year, but I saw the 15th for 2019

Deleted the original post.

Good catch, concerning the July date.

Still not sure why MLB.COM hasn’t updated their website (where I got the original information).

I'm not surprised. He has great stuff. The Jewett factor led to a bad season.

Hard throwing lefties are a hot commodity in MLB. If they can work on his control he could be playing a while.

Justin Campbell, highly regarded Tulane recruit from Simi Valley Calif., goes late in 18th round to Houston; will be interesting to see whether he signs or not with the pros.

If you go to the MLB draft tracker and filter for Louisiana, you will see all the players on the list that can be drafted. If my understanding is correct, you must be nominated by a scout and on the list to be drafted. If you are not on the list, then you cannot be drafted. Tulane players on the list include -

Hoese
Cellucci
Gillies
Artigues
Matthews
Jensen
Trent Johnson
Ty Johnson
Roper
Solesky
Gozzo
Act Owen
Kobi Owen
Green
Fountain

If someone has the time, they can determine what incoming players are in the draft pool.
