Tulane baseball preview

Post by speckled trout »

Check out the preview I did for Green Wave baseball this season. In my spare time I get paid a small amount of money to write articles and run a Tulane Twitter page. What a time to be alive!

Thanks for sharing this. I'm sure you're underpaid! :green wink:

I applaud the baseball optimism. Like many here, I'll be attending and pulling hard for the Wave to make the NCAAs.

Obviously Jewett has to win this year for his job. Yes, it does appear that again this season it will come down to the pitching. As a wild card (literally?), I'll mention Pellerin. Last season he had a major league arm with high school control. If he has fixed it, we will have a season changer. However with all the new arms also, I'm not going to guess how it turns out.

Maybe he should wear a garter belt under his uniform. Paging Annie Savoy. 8)

You would hope, but I’m not so sure.

Wasn't Pellerin in the Cape Cod league this past summer? If so, how did he do?

Connor threw 3 innings Friday in the first scrimmage and allowed 1 hit no walks.
The scouts for the Astros were present and his fastball was clocked at 93 mph
The pitch of the night was a 78 mph sliders to Frankie Niemann. Frankie admitted he had no chance of hitting the ball

Great to hear. If Pellerin and the new arms succeed, we could have some fun around here again. This is a happier place when Tulane wins. :green wink:

May it happen.

Niemann’s biggest complaint was that he could have hit those sliders had the Astros scouts been given proper garbage cans.

Point noted. Marie Leveau, I ain’t. I’ll just settle for looking forward to baseball in a few weeks.

Keagan and Connor threw again Friday
Both are throwing 92-93 with their slider around 77-78
Keagan went 4 innings and Connor threw the last 2 innings
Keagan gave up 4 hits but 3 were bloop singles
Connor didn’t give up any hits

The highlight of the scrimmage was a home run ny Frankie Niemann. A line drive down left field that hit the Tabasco sign

TU49, what does the starting lineup look like? Any ideas on the pitching rotation? Who will be the 8th and 9th inning guys out of the pen. Thank you as usual for the information you provide.

FWIW here is my starting lineup
1B Grant Matthews
2B Jonathon Artigues
3B Trevor Minder
SS Collin Burns
RF Ty Johnson
CF Hudson Haskins
LF Luke Glancy
C. Luis Aviles
DH RH Frankie Niemann
DH LH David Bedgood

Friday starter Keagan Gillies
Saturday starter Brandon Olthoff
Sunday starter Donovan Benoit, Adam Grintz, Jack Aldrich too close to call for now
Top relievers Connor Pellerin, David Bates, Luke Jannetta, Justin Campbell, Bryce Mackey

With less then two weeks to the start of the season there is still a lot of competition for playing time. The fiercest battle is for left field. Luke Glancy, Logan Stevens and Ethan Groff are in a heated battle. Every at bat is important to see who earns the starting position. In the two deep depth chart you can have Logan in right, Ethan in center and freshman Liam Cogswell in left
The top infield backups are Frankie Niemann at first base, David Bedgood at second base and third base, Simon Baumgart shortstop and third base, catcher Haydan Hastings, Parker Haskins

This is my option only

49, what's your opinion on C. Burns being able to handle SS full time; I was kinda wondering if Minder might move to short and Bedgood slide over to 3B as season progresses.

Tulane49, what about Price, Raj, and Whelan? Will they factor in the pitching equation? Also, any injuries to report as the opener is now less than two weeks away? Thank you!

All three will be counted on to take up middle innings
There are no serious injuries to report
Some of the guys are handling nagging injuries but will not keep them out of the lineup

Collin played short all summer and has improved
We need his bat and his speed
Friday he hit a ball to right center and never stopped running for a triple
He can also lay down a bunt and beat it out and is a threat to steal
Collin is the strongest guy on the team

I think he is currently third on the depth chart.

Avila is clearly no. 1.

Frankie sure can hit, though.

D1 Baseball ranks Haskins #14, Matthews #99 and Niemann #140 of the top 150 hitters in college baseball. May be behind a paywall https://d1baseball.com/analysis/d1-anal ... 0-hitters/

We may be the only one (or among a few) that has 3 in the top 150. ROLL Wave!!!

Hasting will be backing up Aviles
Frankie will be packing up Grant at 1B

Travis has a lot of confidence in Parker Haskin
It would be nice if he can redshirt this year
