He just is not as dominant as last year. Still very, very good but just not lights out.
Olthoff threw too many damn pitches in the preseason. He should have been on a 70-75 pitch count thru mid-March. His arm is simply tired.

I don’t personally have a problem with Olthoff going deep in games early in the season but it goes counter to Jewett’s “non conference = Spring Training” philosophy

You would be in the minority with starting pitchers throwing a 100+ pitches in February or March. No one in professional baseball would ever endorse it. Only these coaches in travel ball that have no clue unless the leagues regulate a pitch count. This is the reason we have 13 year-olds getting Tommy John.

Now you better be bunting. If successful, than certainly TOBTTW!

Gutsy win. Needed that. Won't win too many with that margin of hits between the teams. Let's keep the momentum and win the second

Pretty simple game. What a win. This one will be the one that gets us to a regional.

We had no right to win that game. VERY gutty performance.

Still hate the starting a runner on second rule, though.

I didn't realize we did the runner on 2nd with no outs deal in extra innings. Very dumb, but I'll take the win!

Enormous win for the Wave!

UCF should have loaded the bases with one out. But this is college baseball and throwing strikes is not a given (which is pretty pathetic). Nevertheless, terrible coaching.

I’m not the coach, so I don’t know how long Olthoff was prepared
To go in February and March but I’ll say that plenty of college pitchers are throwing 90-100 pitches in February. Pro pitchers do the same on opening day in April. I’m not sure why the time of year matters, it just means that college pitchers have to ramp themselves up earlier.

You are far from correct in Feb & March. Now of course, this presumes the head coach knows what he is doing. I have no clue what teams and players you are referring to. I have been around this game my entire life and if your starters are throwing a lot of pitches that early you are asking for trouble.

I’m 100% correct.
Jack Leiter threw 125 pitches in his no hitter in March 20th.
The night before Rocker of Vandy and Madden at Texas both threw over 115

You are 100% correct on Leiter, Rocker, Olthoff, Madden, and Aldrich. A lot of Vandy connections. Let’s go down the top 100 teams, there top 3 guys, and see what the numbers say. Same for pro ball.

By the way, Rocker’s velocity is down about 4-5 mph, and Leiter has not been the same guy the past 2-3 weekends . Not to say they won’t be Top 10 picks, but I hope they don’t get hurt because it will cost them millions.

Olthoff has averaged 93 pitches per game in his 11 outings, throwing just over 105 pitches in 3 of his outings. Top pitch counts were 109, 107, both coming within his first five outings of the year -- so Feb. and March. Most recent example was late April vs. Memphis when he threw 106. The week after that he threw a 5-hit shutout vs. Houston (99 tosses in that one).
