I'll cop to not having read the article in detail, but I'm puzzled as to why a "non-profit" organization would try to protect its work product. I would think they were doing what they do for the benefit of Mankind, and if Mankind can benefit from the free use of their product, they should encourage it.

Roller, my view is that their work product has value. And they are entitled to realize that value in the furtherance of their "non-profit" activities -- whatever those activities might be.

Concur. An entity can be non-profit but that’s doesn’t mean it should not enjoy the potential windfall from IP, patents, or other funds flow to further its aims. In fact, I’d encourage it. It’s like your non profit radio station which invents a new whiz bang app to do whatever and now it no longer has to beg as much in its all-the-time fundraising efforts.
