Irony of this is the Review and Katrina saved Scelfo’s position several times. Otherwise he never would have lasted that long even at Tulane.

He, Toledo and CJ have never had other HC jobs post Tulane. Brown, Teevens and RR all have had multiple ones. That’s the tell on their quality. Bowden doesn’t count because he “retired” on a very cushy buyout

Is there any Evidence that Bowden tried to coach anymore?

And a future first round pick at QB!

Scelfo was an @sshole, every time I'd see him on campus I'd wave and say "hey coach, good game" or whatever and he'd just look at me like, "who is this peasant that's speaking in my presence?"
In fairness, I'd be mad too if someone gave me a "hey coach, good game" after I got drubbed 52-21 or some such.

This much is certain: despite misses that we have all griped about, Fritz has done a better job building a roster than the previous three coaches. The win total largely reflects that. None of the previous three built a roster that could hold up as an average conference team.

Teevens did that, too, but he couldn't motivate performance out of them.

Yes.

And if winning brings people back out of the woodwork here, how many will it bring back in the stands in general? It's always been true that yogwf was a tiny, misleading percentage of the fanbase, but if people are coming back here, then it may be exponentially true across the fanbase. Getting ranked matters.

Well, yeah, him too. But Scelfo really looked, at times, that he hadn't a clue what was happening out there.

The worst facial expression I ever saw on the face of a head coach belonged to Aaron Kromer when he was briefly the Saints head coach in 2012. He looked like he was watching someone trying to defuse a bomb under his baby’s crib while the baby was in it.

CCJ takes the cake for me, but Orgeron is relevant to this conversation. So is USF's current coach. Bo Pelini was pretty stupid, but he could at least fake not showing it on his face on the field. His brother couldn't though.

I had to smile when Fritz caught himself and basically apologized on this week's Current podcast for using the word "sucks" and Gloor had to tell him they weren't being monitored by the FCC so he could curse if he wanted.

.... And then later Fritz referenced the "A word" and went on to say "... S.... S...".

To me, Fritz' strongest qualities are process and discipline (without being a drill sergeant). That allowed us to keep our heads above water while building the roster. Hand (not flip) that ball to the referee, after every play, every time, from game 1 @ Wake Forest to @ USF. I love it.
Discipline and process are also our biggest risk of fallback when he's no longer at Tulane.

Willie Fritz is now officially a better Tulane Head Coach than Chris Scelfo.

Based on personal experience, I agree with all of the comments about Scelfo. He said some of the damnedest things in my presence, both in private and in public.

I will never understand what possessed Scott Cowen to overlook Rich Rodriguez. One of the dumbest decisions ever.

But not unprecedented. We could have had Lindy Infante after Larry Smith. The entire staff would have stayed.

Oh, well. Stuff happens. Remember when our friends up the river hired Curley Hallman and Jerry Stovall?

Sam Scelfo possessed him. Convinced SC that Chris being willing to stay was more important than hiring the better coach.

I feel like as a Tulane grad who in 1998 hadn't heard of Tulane as a high school junior deserves a Liberty Bowl ring as much as Chris Scelfo does

I went to Memphis twice that season. I deserve one more than he does.

That is true. Everybody knew Scelfo was not going to go anywhere. Until told to pack up.
