I've enjoyed listening to Steve in the booth for nearly 35 years. He's had to suffer through a lot of one depressing losses in an empty Super Dome. He's always sounded the same in my opinion. Let him get some air time while the program is enjoying success, he's earned it! When the time comes for him to step down he should be replaced by another former player who can provide insight that nonplayers cannot.

Wow have to say, I'm pretty disappointed with where this thread went.

Lay off Steve Barrios. He bleeds green. True Greenie.

This conversation is terrible.
And Steve Barrios should leave when he wants to leave. He is a great, loyal Greenie.
Why does this board ban people or run them off? It really is no different than an other Tulane board. In fact, it can often be worst.

Re: Enough is Enough. Barrios‘ Time is Past. Give Hudak the job.
Steve Barrios knows the history of “Tulane Football” and he fully understands the offensive and defensive more complex aspects of the game. This unique combination of knowledge that Steve has is very important and would be hard to duplicate. He played for Tulane as a star WR and is in the TU Hall of Fame as a player graduating in 1972. He played pro ball as a NO Saint. He knows the game at a very technical, strategic, and psychological level that those who have never played at those levels do not understand. This combined knowledge of Tulane football history and technical and strategic knowledge of the game should not be underestimated when hearing his analysis and comments. He should be revered as a Tulane legend that has been dedicated to our football program to continue doing this job as a just a sideline to his primary professional duties in his life.
If anyone fully understands his background, they will appreciate more the depth of knowledge of his color commentary. Steve Barrios is a Tulane icon. Clearly, having the very capable and articulate Corey Gloor and very talented interviewer Maddy Hudak adds much to our broadcast team.

Re: Enough is Enough. Barrios‘ Time is Past. Give Hudak the job.
Barrios has earned the right to decide when he wants to step down.
I agree that Maddy deserves a full time role. She's a talented reporter, writer, and podcaster. She has invested in her career by going to the scouting academy to increase her knowledge base and if Tulane doesn't hire her then it's a matter of time before someone else is smart enough to do so.
BTW, she stepped in on color commentary during one game last season when Barrios was getting honored at halftime. It was only a few plays, but she did an excellent job. Again, it's only a matter of time before someone makes the right call on her.

Sports Talk radio and most sports message boards are the killing fields of intellectual discourse.

Steve absolutely deserves to be the one to decide when he's retired. When he does decide to do so JKO should be next up.
We deserve so much better

Fair enough. We should use the same logic for Coach Lisa Stockton too.

Have no clue why you chose my quote unless you are one of a number of amateur psychologists on this message board. If I have mentioned Lisa Stockton’s name more than two or three times in 15+ years that would be a lot (but maybe it is more because the memory is fading). Nevertheless, Steve has been with our football program as a player and commentator thru a journey of mostly terrible football. He deserves our respect for his support and expertise. I think he should be able to walk away when he says so.

It's awesome that Steve Barrios played football more than 50 years ago, but I guarantee you Maddy Hudak knows more about the modern game than he does. There's some talk of his tone but I think the bigger problem is age...he doesn't seem to know many of our players or have too firm of a handle on what's going on on the field.

A rather incongruent comparison.QuarterbackU wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2023 6:31 pmFair enough. We should use the same logic for Coach Lisa Stockton too.
That said, I see no reason to move Barrios out. I also see no reason not to give Maddy PBP work in the minor sports so that she can "hone her craft."

I'm curious. Does Steve get paid, or is it a labor of love?
I sort of thought when they named the press box after him it was a gateway to a graceful exit.

I just want to know how many posters defending him listened to the complete radio broadcast on Saturday.

I actually go to the games, so I haven't listened to the broadcast.Steve should be there until he wants to retire, unless health issues start to interfere. Maddy should be given full employment by Tulane. After all, she is an alum. Personally, I think she does a great job as a sideline reporter. If she wants the gig, she should do pop for women's basketball. And she can do any mens sporting event when 2 of them overlap and Cory can only do one of them
Re: Enough is Enough. Barrios‘ Time is Past. Give Hudak the job.
Hudak’s latest podcast is informed, thorough, idiosyncratic, insightful, entertaining , enthusiastic and just plain fun to watch and listen to.
I know there is some editing and splicing of several takes but in general her presentation skills carry successfully a half/ hour-plus uninterrupted monologue.
What she does very well is very difficult. Posting with all candor, Barrios could not do for five minutes what Hudak does regularly for extended versions of thirty minutes of her show.
She will go national sooner rather than later and deservedly so. Meanwhile she could not only do color, i safely bet she could do PBP and let Gloor do color. That’s how good she is today.
Simply like Fritz, we need to use the best we have. Barrios doesn’t have to be dumped. Just let him focus on pregame/halftime/postgame locker room.
You might keep Hudak an extra year or two if you expand her role as she has earned. Don’t and she is deservedly gone.
Bad analogy, perhaps, but we will lose our best announcer to the transfer portal because we wont play her enough

I love Maddy and try to listen to her podcast twice weekly, but her knowledge of the game far outweighs her communication skills. Sometimes she just sounds like she’s having a conversation with herself and surprised by everything she says.
She would be good at Barrios’ job because as a color commentator he should be adding insight, or color, to the picture Corey is painting. She understands the game, particularly defense, and could add to the broadcast.

Personally I don’t get all the hudak hype. She’s ok. I think she’s informed and motivated but I don’t love her cadence, sound and is just a little too eccentric for my taste. Eloquence and charisma is lacking. As had been said above, let her start with woman’s bball and continue to work her way up and gain more experience.
