He took over a rolling program from Norvell and hasn't done better than 7-6 outside of the Covid year. He was something of an internal stability hire and hasn't done anything to be considered very good.

Henigan is a fine QB but is general the type of QB we've done well against the last couple of years. He used his legs more against Boise, but generally he's a pocket guy. If we can pressure him, and I think we can, then he'll be just ordinary. Not saying Memphis can't beat us - they very well could - but let's don't make them out to be world beaters.

I don't think this makes any sort of case at all that he's a good coach. "Singularly unimpressive" is what comes to mind.

I'm reminded of Wave 35-0 last year, then Memphis storming back with 4 TDs. There were a lot of fortuitous bounces Memphis's way in the MO game, but the game against us last year and the MO game by Memphis this year were managed well. Maybe it was the assistants not Silverfield, but he doesn't strike me as incompetent.

Wasn't trying to make the case for Silverfield with the Wiki link -- like Jack Webb in Dragnet, only giving the facts as Wiki sees 'em, ma'am.......

Well he hasn't been a disaster, but he definitely hasn't performed to the level of Norvell or Fuente before him. BTW my favorite part of his wikipedia page is that someone feels the need to mention his high school head coaching record was 1-9

If I had to argue that Silverfield was or could be a good head coach I’d say that his first year was adequate for a first year head coach in a strange year (2020), he was replacing a QB with a true freshman in his second year, and he had bad luck in close games last year. If Henigan stays put he’s set up to have two good seasons.

Memphis is still plenty good enough to beat us but what Silverfield hasn’t done is keep up the crazy high level of skill player talent they had under Norvell and when they got rolling under Fuente.
And may our enemies, if they exist, be unconscious of our purpose. - From The Lady Vanishes

In my opinion Tulane should have the advantage in the trenches. Tulane’s D-line should provide pressure to where Henigan could not take 5 to 7 step drop backs without immediate pressure from the D-line. Henigan can move some, but at heart is still a pocket passer. One thing UAB did well was 3 step drop backs or quick slants and crossing routes that negated our D-line’s ability to pressure.

We lost 11 fumbles in 14 games last year. We've lost 7 in 5 games this year so far. :?

Tulane is 2-15 all time in Memphis (vs. Memphis). We're 12-9-1 in New Orleans against them. We haven't beaten them since 1998 in Memphis. It's time.

6 of those 11 were in the last 5 games last year, so we're on a 13 in 11 game streak vs 5 in the previous 9. Was it outlaw who pointed out that recovering fumbles is pretty random and usually evens out?

It was me and it does usually even out as far as recovering goes. I would like to see us put fewer balls on the ground in the first place though

In 2019 we had climbed to first-team-out of both top-25's when we played Memphis, and lost, and never got back.

In 2022 we had climbed to 25th in both polls before we won, and never looked back.

It seems to be setting up similarly this year. We should be in striking distance of the top 25, striking distance of a relatively clear path to the Peach Bowl (not AS clear as last year's), and facing Memphis...... and if we lose, we likely don't make it back, or if we do, barely, at the end of the season.

Let's win this one and make it 2/3

Both teams have a bye next week.
It keeps moving up. Now ESPN has us at 53.3%

Any know espn's metrics for determining win percentage?

None, other than that I find them extremely unttrustworthy and seemingly arbitrary :coolshades:

I know that they use a complicated algorithm, which, in part, uses the Expert System subjective inputs that other rating systems use. For example -- one among many -- state highway depts. use an Expert System rating system for pavement condition.

Memphis has some weapons. Henigan is a good qb who is mobile but has also thrown 5 ints to 10 passing tds (and 2 rushing).

Wide out Roc Taylor is their major weapon, 6 foot 3, he’s had back to back 100 yard plus games against Missouri and Boise.

Watson their running back has has a couple 100 yard games against Boise and navy) but was shut down vs Missouri.

Memphis lost a lot of talent last year. I think we match up well on paper, but if we don’t play a complete game we can certainly lose this game.

Probably due to Boise not doing well this week and somewhat delegitimizing Memphis' win over them?
